The Japan Sumo Association announced the rankings for the Grand Sumo Spring Tournament 2025 on February 25, detailing the wrestlers who will compete as the tournament kicks off on March 9 at Edion Arena Osaka.
The most notable participant is Yokozuna Hoshoryu, currently ranked at the top, showcasing remarkable skill and determined resolve to maintain his position among the elite. Following him are two Ozeki, Daieisho and Kotonowaka, who will be aiming for the championship title.
Among the Sekiwake are Daieisho and Wakatakakage, both of whom are expected to put up strong performances. The competition remains fierce as wrestlers vie for promotion through the ranks, with many eager to prove themselves following the previous tournament's outcomes.
Expectations are high for the Komusubi, featuring Kiribayama and Hoshoryu, especially after their impressive displays last season. The top Maegashira slots are filled with contenders such as Wakakawada, Tochinoshin, and Kotoshogiku, all hoping to capitalize on this season's opportunities.
The newly announced rankings reflect various shifts among wrestlers, including the notable drop of former Ozeki, Chiyotairyu, who has slid down the ranks to Maegashira 10 due to inconsistent performances.
Returning to the ring after significant injuries is the 30-year-old former Ozeki, Ashoryu. After undergoing rehabilitation for knee injuries, Ashoryu feels ready to reclaim his status. He remarked, "It’s great to be back on the dohyo, and I’m pushing hard to regain my spot among the best. It’s what I've worked for and the comeback feels exhilarating." His determination signifies the competitive spirit of the tournament.
Ryuuden, representing Kofu City, is also making headlines as he returns to the tournament ranked at Maegashira 14 after performing excellently last time with 11 wins against 4 losses.
Overall, the tournament promises tough bouts, highly anticipated comebacks, and potentially unexpected upsets. The Sumo Association encourages fans to come out and support their favorite wrestlers as they fight for glory.
The Spring Tournament begins on March 9, and the fervor among fans and competitors is palpable as they prepare for the opening day festivities, showcasing the rich traditions and fierce rivalries inherent to sumo.
