Gran Turismo 7's Major Update: What's New

The iconic racing simulation game receives its biggest update yet, introducing a snow track, new cars, and more enhanced features

Since its launch on March 4, 2022, Gran Turismo 7 has delighted car enthusiasts with its lifelike driving experiences and consistent evolution. Now, the newest update, known as the 'Spec II' version or Update 1.40, is here to elevate the game to even greater heights. Released on November 2, 2023, this update introduces a variety of exciting new features, including a highly anticipated snow track, seven new cars, and a host of other enhancements that promise to bring more thrill to virtual racing.

This substantial update kicks off with a reinvigorated opening cinematic, welcoming players with stunning visuals. But that's just the beginning. The heart of the update lies in the introduction of seven new vehicles, catering to a diverse range of automotive tastes. From classic American muscle to the latest electric sports models, the new lineup is sure to thrill car aficionados. Players can now add cars like the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T 426 Hemi and the 2023 Tesla Model 3 Performance to their virtual garages. Other notable additions include the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, the 1991 Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II, and the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 RS (992).

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the Spec II update is the long-awaited snow track. Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Canadian Rockies, the Lake Louise track offers a unique racing experience in a fantasy ski resort setting. This snow track provides three distinct layouts: the Long Track, which includes various low and high-speed corners; the Short Track, designed for twisty, technical racing; and the Tri-Oval, a high-speed, three-corner circuit. Night-time racing on these snow-laden tracks adds to the overall excitement, requiring players to equip their cars with snow tires for optimal performance.

The update also expands the Extra Menus at the Café, introducing three new menus tailored to car collectors. Meanwhile, the World Circuits pavilion has received a significant overhaul, featuring a mix of new standard and expert-level races. Additionally, the Arcade Race mode has been revamped into the more user-friendly Quick Race. Unique to the PS5 version, players can now challenge Gran Turismo Sophy, a groundbreaking AI racing agent. To further enhance the multiplayer experience, the new update allows up to four players to race together in a split-screen mode, making local multiplayer gaming more exciting and accessible.

Alongside these engaging new features, the Spec II update also brings improvements to the Master License events, introducing 50 new tests that challenge players to hone their driving skills. The traditional Meeting Place has been rebranded as the Paddocks, providing a more interactive social environment where players can chat, use emoticons, and closely inspect each other's cars. The enhanced Race Photo mode, now equipped with slower shutter speeds, offers players the chance to capture dramatic racing moments with greater artistic expression.

For car enthusiasts who love photography, the new update adds a special section called Player's Favorites to the Scapes mode, highlighting popular photo spots. Moreover, the 'Polyphony Digital Tokyo Office' has been added as a new locale, commemorating the mode’s 3000th photo spot milestone. As a final touch, a new dashboard has been introduced to help players track their game progress, offering an overview of achievements and advancements across various game features.

Notably, this update follows the September release that brought an old-school JDM Honda Civic with a distinctive wide body kit from Pandem and a diesel-powered Mazda3 Bio Concept, which runs on 100% biodiesel fuel derived from used cooking oil.

Gran Turismo 7 continues to set the bar for racing simulation games with each update, redefining the gaming experience for car lovers worldwide. 'Thank you for your loyal support, and we hope you continue to enjoy Gran Turismo 7!' reads a statement from Polyphony Digital, the developers behind this beloved series.

With such continuous improvements and thrilling new features, one can only wonder what the next updates will bring. For now, players have much to explore and enjoy with the new Spec II update, turning every race into an unforgettable experience.
