Graduation Celebrates New Law Enforcement Recruits

Attorney General Marty Jackley honors 48 recruits ready to serve their communities

On November 15, 2024, South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley proudly presided over the graduation ceremony of 48 new law enforcement recruits at the George S. Mickelson Criminal Justice Center located in Pierre. This event marked the completion of the Basic Law Enforcement training program, which is required for anyone eager to serve as law enforcement officers throughout the state. Jackley expressed his gratitude to the graduates, stating, "These recruits are now ready to serve their departments and communities. Thank you to them and their course instructors for their efforts."

The graduates hailed from 34 varying state and local law enforcement agencies, highlighting the diversity of the cohort. Over the course of 13 weeks, the recruits underwent 520 hours of rigorous training. The program prepared them for the multifaceted responsibilities they will face as law enforcement officers. According to state officials, this certification course is mandatory for becoming fully qualified officers in South Dakota, ensuring they are well-equipped to confront the challenges of their roles.

Training topics were extensive, with recruits receiving thorough instruction on law, arrest control tactics, firearms handling, vehicle operations, and criminal investigation protocols. Notably, this education was delivered by full-time staff from the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, along with adjunct instructors from various law enforcement agencies scattered across the state.

During the ceremony, the names of the 48 graduates were announced alongside their respective departments. Some of the noteworthy graduates included Shane Miller and Timothy Morgan from the Aberdeen Police Department, Malcolm LaFortune from the Aurora County Sheriff’s Office, and Gage Mau from the Deadwood Police Department, among many others.

The event was attended by family members, friends, and representatives from numerous law enforcement agencies, all gathering to commend the new officers for their hard work and dedication. The atmosphere was filled with pride and celebration as these recruits took the next step toward meaningful careers within the law enforcement sector.

Meanwhile, another community engagement initiative came to fruition as local law enforcement hosted various events aimed at strengthening relationships with community members. This effort is pivotal, especially as public trust remains at the forefront of conversations surrounding law enforcement today.

“Every event we hold not only promotes transparency but also proves our commitment to being part of the community,” noted Chief of Police Jack Smith from Brookings. These engagements allow officers to connect with residents, showcase their dedication to community service, and address pressing societal concerns collaboratively.

The Chief added, “It’s about breaking down barriers and building bridges. Our community needs to know we’re here for them and willing to listen.” Recent programs included family fun days, educational workshops focused on safety, and town hall meetings where citizens could voice concerns directly to their local police leaders.

One such initiative known as “Lunch with the Chief,” hosted by various departments, has proven particularly effective. These informal gatherings allow community members to sit down, share meals, and have open dialogues about community issues as well as the life and daily challenges police officers face. Residents have responded positively, often feeling more connected and engaged with the officers serving their neighborhoods.

Such outreach efforts are seen as not just beneficial but necessary for fostering goodwill and cooperation. “It’s all about transparency and ensuring the community feels empowered to discuss their experiences and share their views,” remarked Officer Sarah Blake from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office. Beyond just improving public relations, these initiatives contribute to finding effective ways to address crime and safety concerns by engaging the citizens most affected by these issues.

Public safety is enhanced when communities work alongside their police departments. With growing calls for accountability within law enforcement, many agencies are rethinking their strategies on community interaction, shifting from traditional methods to more participatory approaches.

All the graduates are now equipped not only with the necessary skills to perform their duties but also the awareness of the importance of community engagement. The future of effective law enforcement lies not just within the realms of law and order but also within the relationships built with the citizens they serve. Engaging actively with the community could play a transformative role, ensuring everyone’s voice is heard, respected, and valued.

Looking forward, the efforts of the South Dakota Attorney General’s office and the various law enforcement agencies do not end with graduation or hosting outreach events. The commitment to continuous improvement and community dialogue is evident, as both serve as pillars of modern law enforcement.

With snippets of hope and perseverance merging daily between law enforcement and the community, the path to fostering trust, safety, and respect seems progressively clearer. The collaboration stands not just as part of their job but as part of their mission—creating safer streets and neighborhoods, one connection at a time.
