Kwan had sent O’Hara official-looking letters from the NHS, effectively duping him. Upon his arrival, he was dressed to the nines, sporting surgical gloves, tinted glasses, and even speaking with what was noted as broken English, reinforcing his nurse facade. O’Hara, unaware of Kwan’s true identity, did not question his legitimacy as he proceeded with the injection, believing it to be part of the Covid-19 vaccination program.
Immediately following the injection, O'Hara felt severe pain and expressed his discomfort, only to be reassured by the disguised Kwan, who downplayed the reaction. Kwan hastily left the premises after administering the injection, prompting O’Hara to doubt the incident when his mother noted the nurse was of similar height to her son—a rather startling observation after the fact.
After feeling unwell, O'Hara consulted his GP, who informed him of the non-existence of the purported NHS organization; this led him to seek emergency medical care at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Makepeace elaborated during the trial, noting, “The prosecution maintains Kwan’s intent was willingly to murder O’Hara rather than merely cause embarrassment or mild harm.” Evidence presented disclosed Kwan’s obsessive behavioral traits, underscoring his fixations which crept perilously close to premeditated murder. His searches for iodomethane and related poison documents before the event showcased his sinister intentions. These included almost 100 internet inquiries about iodomethane, along with images housing techniques on creating toxic substances.
