GP Faces Charges Of Attempted Murder With Fake Vaccine

Thomas Kwan allegedly devised plot to poison his mother's partner amid inheritance disputes

A shocking tale of betrayal and attempted murder has unfolded as Thomas Kwan, a 53-year-old GP from Sunderland, faces serious charges for allegedly plotting to kill his mother’s partner using a fake Covid booster jab laced with poison. The case has made headlines not only due to its bizarre nature but also because Kwan was once considered a respected medical professional.

According to prosecutors at Newcastle Crown Court, Kwan sought to eliminate 71-year-old Patrick O'Hara, who lived with Kwan's mother, Wai King Leung. The court heard how Kwan's apparent motive was to secure his inheritance from his mother’s estate, as O'Hara had no history of wrongdoing against Kwan. "He was, after all, just standing in the way of Mr. Kwan inheriting his mother’s property," said Peter Makepeace KC, the prosecuting attorney.

Prosecutors painted Kwan’s actions as part of an “audacious” plan involving deceit so elaborate it stretched the boundaries of reality. From as early as November 2023, Kwan reportedly began crafting this dangerous scheme, leveraging his extensive medical knowledge of poisons and medications. Under the guise of being a community nurse, Kwan allegedly used forged NHS documents and registered at a hotel under false pretenses to carry out the crime.

On January 22, 2024, disguised with gloves, tinted glasses, and even a mask, Kwan approached O'Hara at his home. He then proceeded to administer what O'Hara believed to be a Covid vaccine. Instead, it was reportedly laced with a flesh-eaten poison, intended to cause severe harm or even death.

Witnesses reported O'Hara immediately feeling intense pain upon receiving the injection, which led him to exclaim, "bloody hell!" He could have never imagined the nurse he believed was helping him was, in fact, trying to kill him.

After the injection, O'Hara’s condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting emergency medical intervention. Doctors later suggested the injuries from the poison injection were so severe they required cutting away dead tissue during surgery. Remarkably, O'Hara survived, leading investigators to Kwan after they pieced together the circumstances surrounding his injuries.

This case has taken on even more chilling undertones, as Kwan has also been accused of preparing to manufacture other potentially lethal substances, like ricin, at his home. Detectives revealed they found alarming content during their investigation, which hinted at premeditated acts of violence.

Adding to the situation's complexity, Kwan initially pleaded guilty to administering a noxious substance but staunchly denied attempted murder, claiming his intent was never to kill but merely to cause discomfort. The incredibility of his defense left many shaking their heads.

During the trial, the prosecutor characterized the situation as tragic and bizarre, sharing the courtroom perspective: "Sometimes the truth really is stranger than fiction. This case is certainly extraordinary. It’s shocking how someone trusted to heal could resort to such malice. Kwan was well aware of the potential repercussions yet felt driven by irrational motives.”

Much to the court's interest, Kwan had also set up spyware on his mother's computer, which prosecutors believe supported his motive for financial gain, utilizing technology to keep tabs on his mother's finances leading up to the incident.

It wasn’t just O'Hara who felt the impact of Kwan's actions; the case has thrown Kwan's entire professional life and familial relationships under scrutiny. With his respected career now tainted, Kwan's situation has raised fundamental questions about trust within the medical community. The trial, which continues to unravel the intricacies of this dark narrative, exemplifies the dangers when familial loyalty clashes with greed.

This startling story is far from over, with many legal battles still to be fought and potentially more shocking revelations to come as the jury weighs the evidence surrounding Kwan’s chilling motivations. The court awaits its verdict, and the public remains transfixed by the tragic entanglements stemming from what should have been nurturing family relationships.
