Goya Awards 2025 Set For Historic Night

The ceremony celebrates Spanish cinema with memorable performances and significant nominations.

Spanish cinema is set to shine on February 8, 2025, as the 39th edition of the prestigious Premios Goya takes place at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Granada. This year's ceremony, starting at 22:00 CET, marks the first time the Goya awards will be hosted by two women: acclaimed actresses Maribel Verdú and Leonor Watling, both of whom expressed excitement for the occasion.

The awards night promises to be memorable, featuring 25 categories. Leading the nominations is 'El 47' directed by Marcel Barrena, with 14 nods, closely followed by 'La infiltrada' by Arantxa Echevarría, with 13 nominations. Other strong contenders include 'Segundo premio' with 11 nominations and Pedro Almodóvar’s 'La habitación de al lado,' which has garnered 10 nominations.

To kick off the festive evening, the red carpet event begins at 18:00 and will be broadcast on La 1 de TVE, allowing fans to see the glamorous arrivals. Coverage will include social media updates from elDiario.es, offering minute-to-minute commentary on the ceremony.

The ceremony is set to feature musical performances by some of Spain's biggest artists, including Alejandro Sanz, Amaral, Rigoberta Bandini, and Zahara, alongside local talents from Granada. This musical element promises to captivate audiences, echoing the success of past performances. Maribel Verdú, one of the presenters, emphasized the duo's intention to create an enjoyable atmosphere, asserting, "Leonor and I are friends who share the same energy, and we understand this work as a game."

Tributes will be paid during the ceremony, including the Goya de Honor awarded to beloved actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, who remarked, “I have been born almost as an actress, and to feel my life’s work acknowledged by my peers deeply moves me.” Richard Gere will receive the Goya Internacional for his longstanding contributions to cinema, recognized for iconic roles across his illustrious career.

Despite the excitement surrounding the evening, there is notable absence among nominees. Renowned filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar and Oscar-winning actress Penélope Cruz will not attend due to health issues, leaving fans disappointed.

With such a competitive field, the atmosphere surrounding the 2025 Goya Awards is charged with anticipation. The ceremony not only celebrates cinematic achievements but also showcases the evolution and vibrancy of Spanish cinema on the international stage. Each nomination reflects the creativity and dedication of artists and filmmakers who continue to push boundaries.

Overall, the Goya Awards this year look to uphold their tradition of excellence, highlighting the artistic achievements from the past year and setting the stage for future successes.
