Governor Wes Moore Honored Deford Family And Appointed New Health Secretary
Governor Wes Moore has made significant moves this month, honoring the Deford Family by inducting them to the Governor’s Agriculture Hall of Fame and announcing the appointment of Dr. Meena Seshamani as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health, both emphasizing his administration's focus on community service and excellence.
On February 6, 2025, during the 55th Annual Taste of Maryland Agriculture event held at Maryland Live! Casino and Hotel, Governor Moore honored the Deford Family from Baltimore County. They were recognized for their contribution to Maryland agriculture, marking their induction as the 56th family to achieve this honor.
During the induction ceremony, Governor Moore stated, “There is no Maryland without Maryland agriculture. That’s why my administration is committed to investing in the people who keep us fed, protect the environment, and grow our economy.” He emphasized the significance of the Deford family's role during challenging seasons faced by farmers.
The Governor's Agriculture Hall of Fame, originally created by former Governor William Donald Schaefer, celebrates agricultural leaders who exemplify high standards of achievement and dedication to their communities and the industry. Agricultural secretary Kevin Atticks praised the Defords for their innovative practices and environmental stewardship, saying, “From their ingenuity in embracing new technologies in agriculture to remaining exceptional stewards of the land, the Defords have earned this prestigious honor.”
At the same event, 11 outstanding programs received Maryland Agriculture Council Educational Grants, reinforcing Maryland’s commitment to advancing agricultural education.
On the healthcare front, Governor Moore also announced the appointment of Dr. Meena Seshamani as the new Maryland Department of Health Secretary, effective April 8, pending Maryland Senate confirmation. Dr. Seshamani succeeds Dr. Laura Herrera Scott, who is leaving on February 28 after two years of service marked by commendable achievements.
“Dr. Meena Seshamani is among the nation’s top health leaders — with an extraordinary career spanning expertise in public service, medical practice, economics, academia, and advocacy,” Moore remarked. He noted her efforts to make the healthcare system fairer and more accessible, especially for vulnerable communities.
Dr. Seshamani's extensive background includes her recent role as deputy administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, where she led initiatives like the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation program and improvements to care for individuals with disabilities.
Dr. Laura Herrera Scott had been lauded for her leadership, ensuring thousands of Marylanders remained eligible for healthcare coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic and implementing programs addressing chronic and infectious diseases across the state. Moore commended her for laying a strong foundation at the Maryland Department of Health.
During the transition, Ryan B. Moran, the Deputy Secretary for Health Care Financing, will serve as the acting secretary. Dr. Seshamani's appointment shapes the future vision of Maryland’s health department, focusing on quality patient care and innovative solutions to public health challenges.
Governor Wes Moore’s recent endeavors demonstrate his administration's commitment to both agriculture and health care sectors, underlining the importance of nurturing local leadership and innovative practices to benefit the state’s economy and public well-being.
Moving forward, both the recognition of the Deford Family and the appointment of Dr. Seshamani signal positive changes and additions to the Maryland government, promising to inspire continued growth and community engagement.
