Government Launches £15 Million Fund For Surplus Farm Food Redistribution

The initiative aims to link farmers with charities to tackle food waste and hunger, especially over the festive season.

The United Kingdom government has announced the launch of a £15 million fund aimed at combating food waste by redistributing surplus produce from farms to charities, homeless shelters, and food banks across the country. Scheduled to kick off in 2025, this initiative seeks to provide significant financial support to the not-for-profit food redistribution sector within England.

According to estimates, around 330,000 tonnes of edible food is wasted or repurposed as animal feed each year before it even leaves the farms. This staggering figure highlights the dilemma faced by farmers who would rather see their produce on plates rather than waste it. Circular Economy Minister Mary Creagh emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, saying, “Nobody wants to see good food go to waste – especially farmers who work hard to put food on family tables across the country.”

The fund aims to bridge the gap between agricultural producers and charities. Many charitable organizations frequently struggle with the logistics of collecting food from farms and ensuring it reaches those who need it most. Under the new scheme, the grants will start from £20,000, which can be used for purchasing necessary equipment such as balers or hoppers. These tools will allow charities to collect and process bulk food items effectively, transforming excess produce from farms directly to parcels for distribution.

Mary Creagh highlighted the broader impact of this initiative, reiteratively emphasizing the need for unity among farmers and charities. She stated, “Our new fund will help the charitable sector to work more closely with farmers, helping to find new opportunities to get their world-leading produce to those most in need within our communities.”

The potential for this fund to address hunger is particularly urgent during the festive season, as families prepare to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. The government’s focus on supporting vulnerable individuals is echoed by charity leaders who are eager to maximize the initiative’s impact. Charlotte Hill, CEO of The Felix Project, and Kris Gibbon-Walsh, CEO of FareShare, expressed their excitement about the funding opportunity, stating, “We are pleased the government has recognized too much food goes to waste on our farms, and it should be redistributed to feed people who need it.”

Both executives shared their optimism about acting swiftly during the British growing season to expedite the redirection of surplus food. They noted, “We have proven models which fund farmers to redistribute their unsold food, which means together, we can take meaningful steps toward achieving a zero-waste Britain.”

This initiative is not merely a funding scheme but rather part and parcel of the government’s larger commitment to addressing food security and sustainability. The government aims to work closely with charities and agricultural producers to create synergies focused on minimizing waste and maximizing the efficiency of food distribution.

By enhancing the logistical capabilities of charities, the fund hopes to provide practical solutions to the growing issue of food waste. Defra officials announced today, December 27, the opening of this fund, affirmatively saying it will, throughout the year, particularly during Christmas, aid organizations targeting hunger, negation of waste and the resilience of the British food system.

Details about the opening of the fund, along with full eligibility criteria for applications, will be released early next year, allowing interested parties ample time to prepare their proposals. This initiative has the potential not only to alleviate hunger but also to reshape the relationship between food producers and the charitable sector, laying the groundwork for collaborative achievements.
