Government Blocks Over 83,000 WhatsApp Accounts Tied To Scams

Ministry of Home Affairs acts decisively against rising cyber fraud in India through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre.

New Delhi: In a significant move to combat cybercrime, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has identified and blocked over 83,668 WhatsApp accounts and 3,962 Skype IDs tied to what has been termed as "Digital Arrest" scams. This alarming revelation was made by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, during a session in the Lok Sabha. The swift action is part of the government's broader initiative to tackle the rising threats posed by online fraud and scams in the digital age.

Digital Arrest scams involve fraudsters impersonating law enforcement officials, falsely accusing individuals of committing crimes. They threaten victims with arrest to extort money or personal information, leading to significant financial loss and emotional distress for those targeted. Over recent years, these types of scams have surged, raising serious concerns regarding cybersecurity.

The government has also taken other substantial measures to bolster its fight against such cybercrime. In addition to blocking the aforementioned accounts, it has deactivated more than 7.81 lakh SIM cards and 2,08,469 IMEI numbers following police complaints that have surfaced regarding these scams. Bandi Sanjay Kumar reaffirmed the administration's unwavering commitment to creating a safer digital environment for all citizens.

To further address the escalating issue of cyber fraud, the MHA introduced the "Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System" in 2021. This system has proven instrumental, saving over Rs 4,386 crore derived from more than 13.36 lakh complaints filed since its inception. The initiative aims to not only facilitate immediate reporting of financial frauds but also assists in halting the siphoning off of funds by criminals.

As part of its continued efforts, the MHA has launched the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (https://cybercrime.gov.in). This user-friendly platform empowers citizens to report all varieties of cybercrimes, including Digital Arrest-related cases. Reports received via the portal are managed by state and union territory law enforcement agencies, which convert them into First Information Reports (FIRs) and take the appropriate action. This structured process aims at enhancing accountability within the system.

In addition to these measures, the government created a dedicated toll-free helpline, 1930, designed to aid citizens in lodging online cyber complaints efficiently. Moreover, comprehensive awareness programs have been initiated to inform the public about the risks associated with Digital Arrest scams. These programs include campaigns through various media such as social media influencers, newspaper advertisements, public announcements in Delhi Metro stations, and broadcasts on Aakashvani and Prasar Bharti.

Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar outlined these initiatives during his address to the Lok Sabha, emphasizing the government's proactive approach. Although the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) does not compile specific data on digital arrest scams, he highlighted the importance of ongoing efforts to mitigate their impact.

According to Kumar, the integrated approach employed through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) consolidates expertise and resources to efficiently address all forms of cybercrime. The I4C serves as a centralized agency facilitating coordinated responses to cyber fraud, a move applauded by many in the cybersecurity community.

On an operational front, Kumar noted that the I4C's efforts have already led to the prevention of financial fraud amounting to ₹4,386 crore, showcasing the government's commitment to tackling financial crime through effective reporting systems.

“So far, a financial amount of more than Rs 4,386 crore has been saved in more than 13.36 lakh complaints,” he said. “The strides made by the government highlight the significance of being vigilant and proactive in the fight against cybercrime.”

Digital awareness is a crucial component of these initiatives, and the government continues to explore innovative methods to engage the public. Initiatives include informing citizens through diverse media, enhancing their understanding of how to safeguard themselves from threats associated with Digital Arrests.
