Gospel Artiste Big Bolaji Passes Away At 50

Nigerian gospel artiste, Bolaji Adedotun Olanrewaju, widely known as ‘Big Bolaji’, has passed away at the age of 50. His family announced the news in a heartfelt statement on Saturday, April 19, 2025, confirming that he died after a brief illness on Easter Saturday.

In their announcement, the family expressed profound sadness over the loss of Bolaji, affectionately referred to as "Big B." They described him as a cherished father, husband, brother, and an esteemed figure in both the church community and the music industry. The statement read, "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bolaji Olarewaju, affectionately known as 'Big B,' a cherished father, husband, brother, and an esteemed figure in both the church community, an ordained Pastor in the RCCG and a giant in the music industry and our community. Bolaji left us on Easter Saturday, 19th April 2025, after a brief illness. His departure leaves a void in our hearts that cannot be filled. Bolaji’s life was a testament to his passion for music, his unwavering faith, and his dedication to uplifting those around him. His legacy is not only in the melodies he created but in the lives he touched and the unquantifiable joy he spread."

Bolaji was not just a musician; he was also a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), where he devoted his life to ministry for over 19 years. He was known for his energetic stage presence and signature praise sessions, which resonated deeply with worshippers across Nigeria and beyond. His annual concerts, titled “Turn It Up With Big Bolaji,” drew large crowds and became a significant platform for emerging gospel talents.

Before his untimely passing, Bolaji celebrated his 50th birthday last November, marking a significant milestone in his life. As news of his death spread, tributes from fans, friends, and fellow gospel artists poured in on social media, highlighting the impact he made in the gospel music community. Fellow gospel artist Abidemi Ayodeji Ogunmolu, known as Bidemi Olaoba, expressed his sorrow in a post, stating, "You will be greatly missed sir. You lived an impactful life. It is well." Another artist, Adejumobi Oluwatosin, known as Tosin Bee, shared, "BIG B!!!!!!!!!! You will be sorely missed Baba. Good night artist."

Social media was abuzz with tributes, with one user on X, @shola_olushola, describing Big Bolaji as a unique figure within the gospel community. "Big Bolaji, it’s saddening to hear about your passing. You were a unique figure in gospel entertainment, especially in Ibadan. Your impact on young people was profound, and your legacy will be remembered. May the Lord comfort your family and friends during this difficult time," the user tweeted.

Bolaji Olanrewaju was born in Gbongan, Osun State, but was raised in Ibadan, Oyo State. He began his music career with a gospel group called J’apha, where he developed a passion for uplifting others through music. Known for songs like “Real to Me,” “God Father,” and “Baba Lo Soun Gbogbo,” he blended Yoruba rhythms with contemporary gospel, making him a favorite on many worship platforms.

In addition to his music career, Bolaji was a certified estate surveyor and was pursuing a PhD at the time of his death. He met his wife, Tolulope, during his academic pursuits, and they married in 2005, welcoming children into their family as they built a life together.

As the family mourns their beloved husband and father, they have requested privacy during this difficult time. They expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support they have received, asking for continued prayers. The family also promised to share details regarding funeral arrangements in due course, stating, "We take solace in knowing that his absence with us is his presence with the Lord, and the indelible mark he left on all who had the privilege of knowing him will not be erased. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received and ask that you continue to keep us in your prayers."
