Google Pay is making waves again with its latest upgrades aimed at revolutionizing digital payments for users across India. These new features were unveiled during the recent Global FinTech Fest held from August 28 to 30 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. This festival, organized by the Fintech Convergence Council, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and Payments Council of India, has become the go-to platform for fintech innovation since it was first held four years ago.
The standout features introduced include UPI Circle, ClickPay QR Scan, UPI Vouchers, and the tap-to-pay functionality with RuPay cards. Set to roll out by the end of 2024, these enhancements promise to make financial transactions more straightforward and efficient for users.
One feature attracting significant attention is UPI Circle, which allows primary users to add family and friends as secondary users. This means users can enable their loved ones to make payments without needing to link their bank accounts to the service. Both full and partial delegation options are available: the full delegation allows secondary users to carry out payments within limits set by the primary user, whereas partial delegation requires approval for every payment request. Such functionality is particularly beneficial for senior citizens or those new to digital payment systems, enabling them to transact with ease.
Another exciting addition is the UPI Vouchers. These prepaid vouchers function similarly to gift cards, allowing recipients to make payments through Google Pay even if they haven't linked any bank accounts. This feature is especially advantageous for corporate gifting or government programs, simplifying and accelerating payment processes without the typical banking restrictions.
Addressing the need for quick bill payments, Google Pay is also launching the ClickPay QR Scan. This feature lets users pay their bills by scanning QR codes generated by billers. Users simply need to scan the code, and relevant bill details will automatically populate, making payments quick and hassle-free.
For those who frequently use RuPay cards, Google Pay is rolling out tap-to-pay capabilities. By the end of the year, users will be able to simply tap their smartphones at contactless card readers, streamlining the payment experience significantly. Importantly, Google Pay guarantees user security by not storing any credit card information within the app, which is a concern for many.
To cater to users' recurring payment needs, Google Pay will also introduce autopay features for UPI Lite, which automatically tops up users' balances when they dip below certain thresholds. This means users won’t have to frequently monitor their balances when dealing with small daily transactions.
Beyond these highlights, Google Pay aims to help users manage their utilities more effectively. The app will facilitate the discovery and linking of prepaid utility accounts such as housing society dues and electricity bills, simplifying regular payments and ensuring users don't miss payment deadlines.
