Google Maps Changes Timeline Data Storage Rules

Users face automatic deletion of location history data if not saved within six months.

Google Maps is undergoing notable changes to its Timeline feature, significantly affecting how users can manage the history of their locations. The tech giant has announced it will begin automatically deleting location history data for users who do not take proactive measures to save their information, heralding this as part of its effort to improve user privacy.

Starting soon, Google aims to shift from storing this sensitive data on its servers to allowing users to maintain their location history locally on their devices. Users will receive notifications about this shift, including alerts indicating their Timeline history will be deleted after three months if it has not been saved. This change is intended to give users greater control over their data, but also raises concerns about the potential loss of cherished memories and important location details.

Indeed, for many users, the Timeline serves as a digital journal, chronicling their travels and personal experiences. Accessing this historical data not only allows individuals to relive special moments, but also aids them in planning future adventures. Some users have even expressed concerns about the practicality of this change, stating the detailed travel history could provide valuable information during emergencies or disputes.

After receiving the notification, users will have approximately six months to save their data. The notification email will be sent by "Google Location History" and will feature the title: "Keep your Timeline? Decide by [date]." Importantly, not all users may have received these notifications immediately, so there is no need for alarm initially. Once the email arrives, though, the countdown begins.

To retain Timeline data, users are encouraged to act quickly.

One effective way to do this is by utilizing Google Takeout, which allows users to export their data. Here’s how to save your location history effectively:

1. Go to takeout.google.com.

2. Deselect all options except for "Location History (Timeline)."

3. Click on "Next Step" and then "Create Export." Users can expect this process to take several hours or even days, and they will receive confirmation via email when the export is completed.

Alternatively, users can export their Timeline data directly from the Google Maps app:

- On mobile devices:

1. Open the Google Maps app.

2. Access your profile picture at the upper right corner.

3. Select "Your Timeline."

4. Click the three dots at the top right.

5. Choose "Location & privacy settings" and then "Export Timeline data."

- On computers:

1. Open Google Maps through your browser.

2. Navigate to the left-hand menu and select "Saved."

3. Click "Create a map" and then "Import" to upload your exported data.

Regardless of the method selected, it is wise to make these backups across all devices used, and regular backups are recommended. Some users have reported experiencing issues where their data has been deleted even after requesting its retention.

While Google Maps Timeline is taking strides toward enhancing data storage user privacy, it is important to note Google collects information through various other applications as well. To optimize personal privacy, users can take additional steps:

- Disable location data for Google Photos: Within the app, navigate to settings and privacy options to deactivate location estimation for photos.

- Turn off facial recognition: Users can disable grouping facial features within Google Photos by adjusting settings under the privacy section.

- Clear YouTube history: Users should go to account settings and erase their search and viewing history.

- Utilize VPN services: A VPN can help obscuring the IP address and encrypting online traffic, providing additional layers of location tracking protection. It is worth noting, though, using VPN with Google Maps might hinder the navigation accuracy.

With these changes on the horizon, it's imperative for users to take immediate action to save their Google Maps Timeline data. Restoring lost data after the deletion process will be impossible, so swift steps are necessary to prevent permanent loss. Whether the information is sentimental or practical, ensuring its retention reflects the growing need for user autonomy over their personal data.
