Google Maps Celebrates 20 Years With Most Photographed Beaches

Brazilian beaches dominate Google Maps' list of top tourist destinations between 2010 and 2025.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Google Maps has unveiled an exclusive survey highlighting the most photographed tourist destinations in Brazil from 2010 to January 2025. Among museums, parks, and iconic attractions, Brazilian beaches have taken center stage, showcasing stunning scenery and high user engagement.

The survey, reported by the newspaper O Estado de S.Paulo, reveals that most of the beaches listed are among the best-rated, with the notable exceptions of Maragogi (AL) and Ponta das Canas (SC), which were replaced in the rankings by Leme (RJ) and Praia dos Artistas (RN).

Leading the pack is Praia das Laranjeiras in Balneário Camboriú (SC), renowned for its calm waters and vibrant scenery. This petite beach, measuring just 750 meters, has garnered over 41,000 evaluations on Google Maps, achieving an impressive average rating of 4.7. Visitors frequently praise the tranquility of its waters, although some critiques mention the limited space on the sand.

Next on the list is Praia da Guarda do Embaú, located in Palhoça (SC), about 46 kilometers from the capital, Florianópolis. This picturesque beach, nestled between the ocean and the Rio da Madre, is a haven for surfers and nature lovers. However, it’s important to note that from April to July, water sports—including surfing—are prohibited during the local fishing season.

Praia Martim de Sá in Caraguatatuba (SP) is another popular destination, boasting a rating of 4.5 out of 5 based on more than 27,000 evaluations. Known for its lively atmosphere and commercial structure, it attracts a vibrant crowd, especially during the summer months.

In Cabo Frio (RJ), Praia do Forte stands out with its extensive 7.5-kilometer coastline. This iconic beach offers a mix of calm and warm waters on one side and a space for water sports on the other, catering to both relaxation seekers and thrill-seekers alike.

Orla Brigitte Bardot in Armação dos Búzios (RJ) also makes the list. Named after the famous French actress who helped put the town on the tourist map, this charming seaside promenade is lined with bars, shops, and fine dining options, making it a quintessential postcard location.

Praia Ponta das Canas in Florianópolis (SC) is known for its serene and family-friendly environment, featuring calm, crystal-clear waters. It seamlessly connects with the neighboring Praia da Cachoeira do Bom Jesus, allowing for long, leisurely walks along the beach.

In Santa Cruz Cabrália (BA), Praia de Coroa Vermelha is celebrated for its tranquil waters and natural pools formed during low tide, making it an ideal spot for beach strolls. The beach is also historically significant, being the site of the first mass celebrated in Brazil in 1500.

Barra da Lagoa Beach, also in Florianópolis (SC), is a bustling fishing hub during peak season, accommodating around 50 boats. With a 650-meter coastline, it features crystal-clear waters and is home to the Tamar Project, which offers educational visits about sea turtles.

Pontal do Maragogi in Maragogi (AL), often referred to as the "Brazilian Caribbean," captivates visitors with its emerald-green and turquoise waters. The natural pools are a must-see, showcasing the beauty of the coral reefs in clear waters.

Finally, Praia do Atalaia in Salinópolis (PA) is known for its warm waters and unique experience where visitors can drive along the sandy beach, depending on the tide. This beach is also a nesting area for turtles, leading to restricted traffic during certain periods. The surrounding landscapes include the Atalaia Dunes and the famous Coca-Cola Lagoon, known for its dark, pure water.

From the vibrant beaches of Santa Catarina to the historical shores of Bahia, the survey by Google Maps not only highlights the beauty of Brazil's coastline but also reflects the diverse experiences that these destinations offer. As the world continues to explore and document its travels, these beaches stand out as must-visit spots for both locals and tourists alike.
