Google Launches Core Update And New AI Travel Features

The tech giant enhances search relevance while unveiling tools for trip planning and booking.

Google has officially wrapped up its first core update of 2025, which was designed to enhance the accuracy and relevance of search rankings. The rollout, which commenced on March 13 and concluded on March 27, follows the significant December 2024 update that had a profound impact on search rankings.

The March core update lasted for 14 days, and early indications suggest it caused notable ranking shifts for certain websites. Some sites experienced significant improvements or declines in their search rankings, while others reported little to no change. This variability has left many website owners analyzing their data to understand the impact of the update.

According to some statistics, pages featuring programmatically generated content and low user interaction may have been more susceptible to ranking changes. Google has advised website owners to utilize tools like Google Search Console to track fluctuations in their rankings and keyword positions. However, tracking tools faced challenges during the update due to changes in Google’s search result pages, complicating the measurement of immediate impacts.

As the update progressed, some ranking volatility was observed, indicating that certain sites might continue to experience fluctuations even after the rollout. "Google core updates come and go. Volatility will be there," noted Ameer Asghar, a digital marketing expert, on social media.

In light of these changes, Google reiterated its guidance for website owners: while there are no specific recovery actions required, focusing on high-quality, helpful content is paramount. The tech giant also provided a list of self-assessment questions for those affected and noted that small recoveries can occur between core updates.

As businesses increasingly rely on organic traffic, the importance of continuous optimization becomes clear. Google’s pattern of releasing core updates every few months suggests that the next update could arrive by mid-2025, emphasizing the need for brands to align their SEO strategies with user-centric content.

Meanwhile, Google also unveiled a suite of new AI-driven features at a recent press event in New York City. These tools aim to assist consumers in planning and booking trips, while also providing valuable resources for travel advisors.

Among the new features, users can now request trip ideas for specific regions or entire countries. For instance, a search for "create an itinerary for Costa Rica with a focus on nature" will yield a sample itinerary filled with sightseeing and dining options.

Building on the popularity of its Google Flights tool, the company introduced a hotel price tracking feature available at google.com/hotels. Users can activate a price-tracking toggle, which will alert them via email if hotel prices decrease.

Additionally, the Google app's Lens feature allows users to point their cameras at an object, ask a question, and receive an AI Overview with insights and links to further information. The Gemini AI chatbot also offers a feature called Gems, which provides a customized travel guide tailored to users' needs and preferences.

Another innovative feature allows consumers to convert their screenshots into summer plans using Google Maps. By granting the app access to their photos, users can identify places captured in their screenshots and save the ones they wish to visit.

As for travel trends, Google’s latest research revealed the top domestic destinations searched on Google Flights: San Juan, Billings, MT, Nantucket, St. Louis, Providence, RI, Maui, Omaha, Juneau, Bangor, ME, and Madison, WI. Internationally, the top destinations included Curacao, Osaka, St. Lucia, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Johannesburg, Cairo, and Aruba.

Interestingly, destinations that offer easy access to the outdoors, such as Billings and Juneau, are trending strongly. Furthermore, cabins have emerged as the top-trending type of lodging for romantic getaways, while "dude ranch" vacations are gaining popularity among families in the U.S. this year.

For shorter weekend getaways, outdoor locations like upstate New York, Joshua Tree National Park, and Sedona, Arizona, are also trending in searches. Notably, historical data shows that searches for "carry-on bags" have historically outpaced those for "checked bags." However, recent years have seen a shift, with searches for checked bags surpassing carry-ons.

In terms of packing, "vacuum bags" and "compression packing cubes" have emerged as top-trending searches for travel essentials, reflecting changing consumer preferences.

As Google continues to innovate with AI-driven tools and updates to its search algorithms, businesses and consumers alike must stay informed and agile to navigate the evolving digital landscape. The emphasis on high-quality content and user-centric features will be crucial for success in both SEO and travel planning.
