Google Launches 'Ask For Me' AI Calling Service

This innovative tool simplifies interactions with local businesses for users needing services.

On January 31, 2025, Google unveiled its latest innovation, the "Ask for Me" feature, aimed at revolutionizing how users interact with local businesses. This AI-powered tool allows users to automate calls to nearby services, streamlining the process of gathering information about pricing and availability.

Currently rolled out through Google Search Labs, "Ask for Me" is available exclusively to users across the United States, with initial focus on two types of services: nail salons and auto repair shops. Imagine needing to book a nail appointment or check on car maintenance but not having to make the call yourself—the AI does it for you.

Once users enable the feature, they can simply search for local services such as nail salons or auto shops. Upon initiating the process, they will be prompted with relevant questions. For example, users are asked if they need nail services or specific car maintenance like oil changes or tire rotations. They provide detailing about their vehicle, such as the make, model, and year of manufacture, along with their contact details, which can be either their email or phone number for updates about their request.

Google's AI then takes over. This advanced tool uses the Duplex technology, which was first introduced back in 2018. It allows machines to converse naturally, making inquiries and gathering necessary details from businesses on behalf of users. "Ask for Me' is currently being tested through Google Search Labs, this AI-powered tool can call nail salons and auto shops on your behalf," reported by Android Police.

The results are relayed back to the user swiftly—responses are communicated via SMS or email within about 30 minutes. This efficient feedback loop allows users to quickly compare options and make informed choices without ever having to speak directly with the business themselves.

While this AI tool promises convenience for users, Google is mindful of the potential confusion it may cause for business owners. Each AI-generated call begins with an automated announcement, clearly stating, "Google is calling on behalf of a user." This provides some clarity to avoid miscommunication. Businesses have the option to opt out of receiving such calls through their Google Business profile settings, allowing them to retain control over how they manage customer interactions.

To prevent overwhelming businesses with requests, Google has also instituted call quotas, ensuring calls are made only within reasonable limits. This careful design helps mitigate potential backlash against AI-generated calls, as businesses struggle to adapt to increasingly automated customer service interactions.

Looking to the future, there’s significant potential for expansion. While "Ask for Me" currently centers on nail salons and auto shops, one can easily envision its application extending to other service sectors, such as restaurants, doctors’ offices, and more. By enhancing its capabilities, Google could integrate this AI service across various platforms, drastically altering how consumers book appointments and seek information.

While the adoption of AI calling may raise eyebrows—would you trust an AI to make your calls for you?—the functionality speaks to the progression of technology. It carries both excitement and unease as users contemplate the role of automated systems replacing or aiding human interactions.

The recent developments with "Ask for Me" highlight how technology continues to shape our day-to-day tasks, especially as services evolve to meet modern consumer demands. Google is at the forefront of this transition, contributing to the dialogue on how AI can streamline habitual processes, making them more efficient and user-friendly.
