Google Launches AI-Powered Call Feature For Businesses

The new tool aims to simplify appointment bookings by allowing AI to call businesses on behalf of users.

Google has recently launched an innovative new feature called 'Ask for Me,' which leverages artificial intelligence to handle phone calls to businesses on behalf of users. Currently available as part of Google’s Search Labs, this experimental tool is set to transform how people schedule appointments and gather information without the need for direct phone conversations.

According to reports, users can opt for the 'Ask for Me' feature when searching for services like nail salons or auto repair shops. This new technology allows users to quickly access important details such as pricing and availability by having the AI make the phone call themselves. All users must do is fill out a form indicating what they need, such as the make and model of their car or the type of manicure they are seeking. After submitting this information, Google takes over, contacting local providers and sending back results via email or text.

The introduction of this service marks Google's latest effort to streamline the mundane routines associated with booking appointments. “If you work at a nail salon or an auto repair shop, get ready for customers to start sending hordes of AI Karens your way,” reported The Verge, signaling the potential impact of this feature on small businesses.

Once activated, the 'Ask for Me' function operates via technology from Google Duplex, which was first unveiled back in 2018. Duplex garnered attention for its ability to make reservations and appointments seamlessly, mimicking human speech effectively enough to leave the recipients unaware of communicating with AI. Google is currently testing 'Ask for Me' in select service categories, with plans for future expansion as the feature develops.

When the AI makes calls, businesses will be notified upfront with the option to recognize it as automated. Google spokesperson Craig Ewer reassured, “Google is doing its best to make sure businesses don’t get overloaded with calls,” indicating the company’s commitment to enhancing this service with thoughtful limitations. Businesses can also opt out of receiving these AI-generated calls via their Google Business Profiles.

On social media, Google product lead Rose Yao highlighted the advancements this feature builds upon, stating, “Ask for Me is powered by Duplex, which mostly uses AI to make reservations on your behalf.” This integration is pivotal as it not only speeds up the process for consumers but also encompasses aspects of agentic AI initiatives, similar to those proposed by other tech leaders.

The feedback from business owners has pointed toward adjustments they may need to make to accommodate this new client dynamic. While some may find the automated calls challenging, having the option to decline could prove beneficial during peak service hours or less busy times.
