Google Introduces New Feature For Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Robust open/close detection aims to improve performance with magnetic cases.

Google is stepping up its game with the introduction of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and its latest software update, Android 16, which promises to include exciting features for foldable smartphone users. One highlight of this update is the 'robust open/close detection' setting, aimed at enhancing the device's performance with magnetic cases.

This new feature addresses the common issue faced by foldable phone users: magnetic accessories can interfere with the hinge angle sensor, which is responsible for accurately determining whether the phone is open or closed. According to reports from 9to5Google, the 'robust open/close detection' will help the Pixel 9 Pro Fold more accurately detect its state when using magnetic cases, thereby improving the overall user experience.

With the release of Android 16 Beta 2, Google has introduced this feature to assist users who rely on magnetic accessories. "If you’re using a magnetic accessory, turn on the 'robust open/close detection' in Settings. This helps your Pixel Fold more accurately detect if it’s open or closed," states the notification from the Pixel System service, providing users with clear instructions on how to enable this feature.

Despite its promise, users need to be cautious. Google has warned users about potential increases in battery usage associated with enabling this feature. If magnetic accessories are removed, it's wise to disable it to conserve battery life, reinforcing the importance of adapting settings according to user needs. The feature will be accessible through the Settings app, likely under the 'Display & touch' section, though it isn't fully activated yet.

The 'robust open/close detection' feature is not only limited to the first-generation Pixel Fold but is also expected to benefit users of the second-generation Pixel 9 Pro Fold, pointing to Google's commitment to enhancing its foldable lineup.

Since the rollout of the first Android 16 beta update in late January, users across various Pixel models, including the Pixel 6, 7, and 9 series, have experienced new features accompanied by some bugs typical of beta versions. While these updates provide new functionalities, the software's imperfections remind users to be patient as Google fine-tunes these enhancements.

Interestingly, foldable smartphones often use Hall effect sensors to determine their operating state—open or closed. Touching magnets to the surface can cause unintended screen shut-offs, interrupting the user experience. This interference can be particularly frustrating during everyday tasks, and the new feature aims to mitigate these disruptions.

There is also mention of Apple-like magnet standards, such as MagSafe and the upcoming Qi2 charging standard, which may involve more magnetic interference. The 'robust open/close detection' feature is expected to play a significant role as more accessories integrate magnets, making it increasingly relevant for users.

While gathered feedback from beta users indicates excitement for the new feature, expectations should be tempered as functionality hasn’t been fully activated yet. Currently, notifications for this feature exist as part of Android 16 Beta 2 but do not immediately modify settings.

“The new Android 16 feature doesn’t do anything yet,” reported 9to5Google. "The notification doesn’t turn the settings on—you will not find this functionality actively operating on your device yet.” But users are encouraged to keep their devices updated and stay tuned for the next beta update, which might bring the integrated feature to life.

For now, Google continues to work tirelessly on improving user experiences across devices, responding to feedback and effectively refining its hardware and software solutions. Those using the Pixel 9 Pro Fold or its affiliates will have updates to look forward to, aimed at making foldable technology seamlessly integrated with daily life.

Future updates will not only focus on addressing current issues but may also expand the range of functionalities available for users of foldable smartphones. Early adopters of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold are encouraged to share their experiences, particularly as more enhancements are introduced. The tech community remains eager to see how these developments play out as Google solidifies its foothold in the competitive foldable smartphone market.
