Google Contacts Update Enhances Usability

YouTube prepares to launch more affordable Premium Lite subscription for users craving reduced ads.

Recent updates from Google highlight significant changes to two key services: Google Contacts and YouTube Premium. For users of Android devices, the Google Contacts app has received performance enhancements aimed at streamlining user experience, particularly concerning sync options and overall interface tidiness. Simultaneously, YouTube is launching plans for YouTube Premium Lite, which promises to provide viewers with more affordable access to ad-reduced content.

Starting with Google Contacts, the latest version 4.49 brings forth notable revisions. A new sync status card has been added to the Organize tab, giving users clear visibility on their sync status and the total number of contacts stored across their Google account. This update not only informs users but also provides quick access to sync settings directly from within the Contacts app, which is considered a convenience upgrade compared to earlier versions where such settings were hidden away inside Google Play Services.

The sync status card displays important information including the number of contacts associated with the user's Google account and the last time these contacts were synced. Users now have the ability to tap on the card, which leads to additional contextual information about how Google’s automatic syncing works across devices. This functionality ensures users can easily manage their contacts and maintain the latest information across their accounts, demonstrating Google's commitment to enhancing user experience.

The Google Contacts interface has also undergone minor tweaks for improved usability. Specifically, the account switcher has been simplified, with the last sync status now integrated directly within the account menu. Previously visible signed-in accounts are now hidden by default, requiring users to tap on a chevron to access them. While this change may initially seem inconvenient, it contributes to creating a cleaner and less cluttered interface—an important factor for users juggling multiple accounts.

Set to debut soon across the U.S., Australia, Germany, and Thailand, this new tier is targeted at those who mainly consume content other than music videos. According to Bloomberg, existing Premium Lite versions employed previously included ad interruptions, but unlike completely ad-free offerings, this new plan might offer limited ads instead.

The idea behind YouTube Premium Lite stems from user demand for affordable options without the full array of features offered by YouTube Premium. Historically, YouTube had tested Premium Lite amid European markets back in 2021, but the service was discontinued the following year due to limited popularity. Fast forward to October 2023, rumors and reports resurfaced about the re-evaluation of this subscription model. Paul Pennington, YouTube’s spokesperson, confirmed the company’s commitment to testing this new version, indicating it would feature "most videos ad-free." Although formal pricing details have yet to be confirmed, some users have reported seeing pricing around AU$8.99 per month, significantly cheaper than the full YouTube Premium subscription, which is priced around AU$16.99.

This upcoming YouTube Premium Lite is seen as beneficial especially for viewers who enjoy regular video content, such as gaming or lifestyle vlogs, without necessarily being interested in music functionality or offline viewing options, which are hallmarks of the existing premium tier.
