During his participation at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2025, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, discussed AI’s rapid evolution, the implications of quantum computing, and the broader role of technology in shaping economies and societies worldwide. Pichai emphasized how AI is increasingly becoming an integral part of daily life, with models such as Gemini leading advancements in efficiency and accessibility. He noted AI breakthroughs are occurring globally, highlighting DeepSeek’s recent innovation as an example of how open-source AI models can accelerate progress.
Pichai spoke during an insightful discussion with Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, and Vice Chairman of the World Governments Summit (WGS). The summit, taking place in Dubai from February 11 to 13, themed ‘Shaping Future Governments’, gathered influential leaders to explore significant trends and transformations in governance.
Discussing AI’s role in reshaping the digital space, Pichai addressed the competition posed by platforms like ChatGPT, highlighting the evolution of search engines and Google’s continued strong search volume growth. He expressed confidence in Google’s ability to lead AI-driven innovations, emphasizing the potential for AI to expand rather than replace existing platforms.
Pichai reflected on Google’s groundbreaking achievements, particularly its advancements in quantum computing and the immense computational power unlocked by recent breakthroughs. He remarked, "It is still premature to impose stringent regulations on quantum technology." Instead, he advised governments to promote research and innovation, encouraging nations to invest in quantum infrastructure and research clusters to maintain their technological edge.
While acknowledging the potential risks of quantum computing, including security concerns, the Google CEO underscored the importance of prioritizing the comprehension of this technology and preparing for its impending large-scale deployment.
Pichai reaffirmed Google as an AI-first company, sharing plans for the company's first international self-driving car trials set to launch in Japan before scaling globally. He detailed how AI is woven throughout Google’s product suite, from Pixel’s advanced computational photography capabilities to Waymo’s endeavors with autonomous driving.
Addressing workplace innovation, Pichai outlined Google’s efforts to encourage AI adoption among its employees. There is active integration of AI tools across various functions such as coding and customer service, which are enhancing productivity and streamlining workflows. He acknowledged the UAE’s initiative to train one million individuals in AI prompting as both strategic and necessary for preparing for the future driven by artificial intelligence.
Emphasizing the significance of balanced regulation, Pichai outlined four key areas important for governments to focus on: the development of strong infrastructure, workforce upskilling, unlocking public sector data for AI improvements, and crafting forward-thinking regulations to encourage responsible AI usage.
Pichai did not shy away from acknowledging the risks associated with AI, especially concerning deepfake technology and misinformation. He advocated for the establishment of global standards to address these challenges, urging governments to develop capabilities for assessing AI risks and implementing measures to mitigate potential unintended consequences.
WGS 2025 convened over 30 heads of state and government, more than 80 international and regional organizations, alongside 140 government delegations. The agenda featured 21 global forums and over 200 interactive sessions involving more than 300 prominent speakers including ministers, experts, and decision-makers. Beyond just business and technology, the summit also hosted discussions surrounding pressing issues like climate change and global health.
Concluding its three-day run today, WGS 2025 will spotlight keynote speeches from various heads of state, including notable dialogues focused on future-centric topics such as healthcare innovation. The event emphasizes the urgent need for collaboration between businesses, governments, and individuals to navigate the complex realities of advancing technology responsibly.
