Gonzaga Bulldogs Climb To No. 18 After Strong WCC Start

The Bulldogs secure three straight wins, setting the stage for upcoming key matchups against local rivals.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have climbed to No. 18 in the Associated Press men’s basketball poll after starting their West Coast Conference (WCC) play on a high note.

Following a perfect 3-0 run, the Bulldogs improved their overall record to 12-4, with impressive wins against Pepperdine, Portland, and Loyola Marymount University (LMU). Their performance not only brought them back from five straight weeks of falling rankings but also showcased their offensive efficiency and potential to gain momentum moving forward.

Last week, Gonzaga faced Pepperdine first, claiming victory with a close 89-82 score. They continued their success by dismantling Portland with a more one-sided 81-50 score. The last of their three-game streak saw them overpower LMU, winning 96-68.

The Bulldogs controlled each of these games with strategic offense led by Khalif Battle and Graham Ike, who have become pivotal forces on the court. Battle has been particularly impressive, averaging 19 points over the three-game stretch, followed closely by Ike at 17 points. Head coach Mark Few praised these players, stating, “KB was great tonight. I thought he was great not only offensively ... but he was really good on the defensive end, making plays. And then Graham. Graham just got back, he was forceful, and kind of the Graham we all expect, so hopefully he can stay inthat space because he is pretty special when he stays and plays likethat.”

Looking ahead, Gonzaga is set to host San Diego, who currently has only four wins this season, making them strong favorites with ESPN Analytics giving the Bulldogs a 99% chance to win. Following this matchup, the Bulldogs will face Washington State, with both teams sharing the top spot of the WCC standings at 3-0.

Washington State, with its record of 13-3, will provide both teams with significant competition as they fight for the WCC title. The matchup promises to draw attention, especially as Gonzaga aims to showcase their resilience after earlier setbacks this season, including four losses which have been against ranked opponents.

Within the broader ranking scene, Gonzaga has maintained their position within the top teams statistically, holding steady at No. 6 according to KenPom metrics and NET rankings. This consistency reflects their defensive prowess and offensive capabilities, each placing them among the elite teams even with their four defeats.

The dynamic performances of Battle and Ike, especially against tough competition, could be key as the Bulldogs aim to overcome teams like Washington State and build upon their ranking momentum this January. The opportunity to build their résumé with upcoming matchups only adds to the excitement.

Gonzaga, which has seen its ranking drop from top standings earlier this season, is back on the rise, demonstrating their abilities to shake off adversity. Their recent wins and upcoming games may determine not only the WCC standings but also their placement heading toward potential postseason play.

Overall, as the season progresses, the Bulldogs need to maintain their focus and take advantage of their schedule, particularly with quality opponents looming before them. If they keep their momentum up, fans can expect Gonzaga to push forward in the national rankings.
