Gojira Ignites Paris Olympics With Revolutionary Metal Performance

The French band blends heavy metal with revolutionary themes, captivating viewers at the iconic opening ceremony.

The Paris Olympics opening ceremony was one for the books, packed with jaw-dropping moments and awe-inspiring performances. But one act, in particularly, sparked more than just a wave of excitement—it ignited a frenzy of questions. People were left asking, “Who thought of this?” The moment in question wasn’t your traditional Olympic performance; it was something far edgier.

It was a spectacle, a blend of revolutionary energy, heavy metal, and Parisian history, all wrapped up in fiery, explosive displays. What made it even more mind-blowing was the fact it wasn’t just the band’s wild performance stealing the show—it was the behind-the-scenes mastermind calling the shots.

Enter Gojira, the French metal titans who were tapped for one of the most iconic performances at the 2024 Paris Olympics. But how did they, known for their hard-hitting sound, become the stars of the Olympic stage? The answer lies with Victor Le Masne, the composer and musical director behind the event. It was his vision to have Gojira perform, as their revolutionary sound matched the energy he wanted to convey.

“We were all a little bit shocked,” Gojira’s lead singer and guitarist Joe Duplantier admitted. “Is this for real? What does it mean?” But as soon as they understood the significance of the request, they were all in. Le Masne explained his idea of tying the performance to the French Revolution, symbolizing upheaval, change, and resistance through the lens of metal music.

What resulted was nothing short of magnificent—a breathtaking performance set at La Conciergerie, where history collided with modern-day rebellion. The band played their rendition of Ah! Ça Ira, inspired by revolutionary ideals, with flames bursting from the stage as visuals of ‘beheaded’ Marie Antoinette lined the walls. Yet they chose not to lean too heavily on the bloodier aspects of the song.

“Let us rejoice; good times will come,” they echoed, focusing on uplifting meanings within the lyrics, “Without fear of fire or flame.” This shifted the narrative to one of hope, taking the edge off the violence associated with the song, amplifying its triumphant spirit.

From revolution to Grammy glory, the Olympics performance wasn’t merely about live spectacle, it became defining for the band. Their rendition, reworked and retitled as Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça Ira!), hit streaming services shortly after the event and quickly gained traction globally. It struck a chord with listeners, drawing them to its mix of powerful, politically charged music and innovative performance art.

For the band, the recognition did not stop there. The reworked performance earned them nominations for the 2025 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, competing against some of Metal’s biggest names like Metallica and Judas Priest. For Gojira, having long operated outside the mainstream spotlight, this nomination served as proof of their impact and influence throughout 2024.

But it wasn't merely about the accolades. Their performance solidified Gojira as more than just another metal band; they emerged as cultural disruptors, artists who channel their music to challenge societal norms. Their roots lie deep within the spirit of revolution, and their relentless inclination to push metal boundaries has secured their place both within music history and global pop culture.

With the Grammy ceremony approaching on February 2, fans and critics alike are left wondering whether Gojira will take home the prestigious award—and whether their next groundbreaking moment will eclipse the last. The performance, cherished by many but met with criticism from some pearl-clutchers who deemed it “satanic,” truly split opinions.

Gojira’s explosive showcase showcased exactly what it means when heavy metal collaborates with rich historical narratives. With every scream and guitar riff, they reminded the world not just of their musical prowess, but also of the ever-present opportunity to reflect on the past through modern expressions of art.
