Goat Joins Newfoundland Marathon And Steals The Spotlight

An adventurous goat named Joshua turns heads and captures hearts at the T’Railway Trek Half Marathon

On September 29, the inaugural T’Railway Trek Half Marathon took place in the picturesque town of Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador, but it wasn't just the human competitors who stole the show. Joshua, an adventurous goat, decided to join the race, turning heads and drawing laughter from the crowd.

Joshua, belonging to local resident Jeremy Taylor and having the run of Taylor's Pumpkin Patch, was not initially scheduled to be part of the marathon. When runners passed by the pumpkin patch where he lived, the 10-year-old goat made the impulsive decision to break free from his collar and join them. Taylor recalled the moment, saying, "He decided to break his collar, which he had on for years, and join the runners.” The mayor of Conception Bay South, Darrin Bent, humorously remarked, “The goat decided, ‘Well, I’m not staying here, I’m joining them!’”

This impromptu entry turned out to be quite the spectacle. Joshua ran for about 2.5 kilometers (or just over one and half miles) alongside the marathon participants, mingling with both runners and onlookers. Although he didn’t complete the full 21 kilometers, the furry interloper became the unofficial star of the day. He was spotted stopping at water stations and interacting with the bewildered but amused crowd.

The goat's grand adventure came to light when Taylor realized he had gone missing. He found out about Joshua’s unexpected race participation through social media posts where neighbors shared photos of the goat running alongside participants, effectively being directed by helpful crossing guards who guided him along the route. "When he saw the crowd running, he decided to join in, not knowing this is one of the longest runs he’s ever had,” Taylor added.

At around the four-kilometer mark, Taylor and his family caught up with Joshua, and they helped him finish the remaining distance to the finish line at Topsail Beach. Upon crossing the line, Joshua was presented with his very own medal, which only contributed to the amusing tale. Bent exclaimed, "We very quickly put a medal around his neck and he became quite the star.” Runners and spectators alike were thrilled to take photographs with the goat who not only participated but also made new friends along the way.

The buzz surrounding Joshua’s antics quickly spread, with social media lighting up as people recounted the tale of the goat who decided to run a half marathon. His story not only sparked joy and laughter but also led to various accolades, including invitations for Joshua to return as the event's mascot next year, albeit not as a runner this time. Bent proclaimed, "To have Joshua join in and become a kind of mascot-star of the event is something we didn’t expect, and we’re just delighted.”

Joshua isn’t the first animal to break onto the marathon scene, as there have been other instances of pets joining races, such as Boogie, the chocolate Labrador, who ran most of the similarly recognized Evansville Half Marathon in Indiana back in 2013, receiving his own medal too. This incident at the Newfoundland marathon reminded many of such earlier stories and added to the charm of animal participation in sporting events.

While the event was primarily organized to promote fitness and community involvement, Joshua's escapade created connections and laughter among participants and spectators, making it even more memorable.

“Most people who actually ran the half marathon wanted their picture with Joshua at the finish line,” Bent said, noting how life-sized cardboard cutouts of Joshua are likely to become popular memorabilia for the race participants.

With Joshua’s newfound fame, the event coordinators are hopeful for increased participation next year, both from enthusiastic human athletes and spirited animals. A puppy or another goat might think it’s their turn next year. The town’s reputation for quirky encounters soared, and all thanks to one curious goat.

This light-hearted story sparked discussions about fun ways to promote community events and the unexpected joy animals can bring to otherwise standard sporting events. Whether it's through charity work, local business involvement, or the inclusion of furry mascots, Joshua’s story has shown how connection and laughter can emerge effortlessly.

So as the people of Conception Bay South prepare for future events, there is already talk about how to include Joshua once again, perhaps even planning for more fun animal appearances to keep the good vibes rolling. After all, it's not just about finishing times but the memories made along the way—especially when they involve escape goats running half marathons.
