Global Leaders Mourn The Passing Of Manmohan Singh

World leaders express sorrow and pay tribute to India's former prime minister's legacy and contributions.

Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India who was instrumental in the country's economic reform and had a long-standing impact on international relations, has passed away at the age of 92. Singh died late on the night of December 26, 2024, at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, after having experienced breathing difficulties. The news of his passing has prompted waves of condolences from leaders across the globe, reflecting his legacy as one of the most respected figures in international politics.

Leaders from the US, Canada, France, Sri Lanka, and several neighboring countries, including Afghanistan, Maldives, and Nepal, have expressed deep sorrow over Singh's death, echoing sentiments of loss and remembrance for his significant contributions. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken referred to Singh as "one of the greatest champions of the US-India strategic partnership," emphasizing his role in strengthening ties between the two nations. He remarked, "Dr. Singh was one of the greatest champions of the US-India strategic partnership, and his work laid the foundation for much of what our countries have accomplished together in the past two decades."

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his condolences, stating, "India has lost a great man and France a true friend, in the person of Dr. Manmohan Singh. He had devoted his life to his country. Our thoughts are with his family and the people of India." Such sentiments highlight the high regard international leaders held for Singh, who was known for his dedication to advancing India's economy and foreign relations.

Among those paying tribute was Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who called Singh "a visionary leader" and extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the people of Sri Lanka, stating, "His humility, intellect, and dedication to public service will forever inspire future generations. May his soul find peace and be united with the divine!" The kind words from world leaders serve as testimony to Singh's commitment not just to India but also to fostering international collaborations and alliances.

India's neighbor to the north, Afghanistan, saw former President Hamid Karzai mourn Singh's loss deeply, describing him as "one of its most illustrious sons" and praising his unwavering friendship toward the Afghan people. Karzai stated, "I extend my deepest condolences to his family, the government, and the people of India. May his soul find eternal peace." This sentiment was echoed throughout the political spectrum, indicating Singh's influential role beyond India’s borders.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin also acknowledged Singh's legacy, referring to him as "an outstanding statesman" who played a pivotal role during his tenure to promote India’s economic development. Meanwhile, comments from former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper exemplified Singh's global influence: "He was an individual of exceptional intelligence, integrity, and wisdom. Laureen and I wish to convey our condolences to all his family and friends." This collective mourning showcases Singh's lasting impact on global leadership.

Under Singh's leadership, India made significant strides not only economically but also diplomatically. His tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen India's international presence, with key agreements such as the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, which highlighted India’s growing prominence on the world stage. With such transformations, the impact of Singh's vision reached far and wide, and many leaders reflected on it fondly.

On the domestic front, the Indian government has announced seven days of national mourning. During this period, the national flag will fly at half-mast, and there will be no official entertainment throughout the country. Singh’s last rites are set to be conducted with full state honors, reflecting the esteem with which he was held. The government stated, "It has been decided...that seven days of state mourning will be observed throughout India from 26.12.2024 to 01.01.2025 both days inclusive."

Singh is remembered not just as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 but also as the architect of India's economic liberalization. Tributes on social media saw individuals sharing encounters with Singh, fondly recalling his dedication and the warmth he displayed, not only as a leader but as a person. His legacy promises to inspire future generations, underscoring how he rose from humble beginnings to lead one of the world’s largest democracies on the path of growth.

With Singh's passing, India has lost not just a former prime minister but also a statesman whose vision and policies shaped the nation’s future. His influence will linger on, as reflected by the heartfelt tributes from around the world, reminding us of the man who strived tirelessly for India's progress and global integration.
