Global Leaders Mourn Loss Of Manmohan Singh

World unites to honor former Indian Prime Minister's legacy and contributions.

San Francisco: Global leaders expressed their grief over the passing of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 on December 26, 2023. Singh was not only admired for his economic reforms but also for his significant efforts to strengthen ties between India and foreign nations.

US President Joe Biden led the tributes, describing Singh as a visionary leader. He stated, "Dr Singh was one of the greatest champions of the US-India strategic partnership, and his work laid the foundation for much of what our countries have accomplished together," celebrating Singh's role in key initiatives like the US-India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Agreement. This agreement signified transformational progress for both nations and helped build the trust and collaboration seen today.

Singh spent ten years at the helm of India, from 2004 to 2014. During his tenure, he was recognized as the architect of India’s liberalizing economy, steering policy reforms, and fostering relationships with several countries. Biden noted, "The US-India partnership is among the most consequential in the world," emphasizing Singh’s role as pivotal to this development.

French President Emmanuel Macron also paid tribute, stating, "India has lost a great man and France a true friend, in the person of Dr Manmohan Singh." Macron reflected on Singh’s dedication to his country and his ability to bridge international ties with integrity.

The condolences extended beyond the United States and France. Canada and various other nations voiced their sorrow upon hearing the news. Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed grief, stating, "He was an individual of exceptional intelligence, integrity, and wisdom." Harper reminisced about his time working alongside Singh, offering his sympathies to Singh’s family.

Anticipatedly, tributes also arose from neighboring nations. For example, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai stated, "India has lost one of its most illustrious sons," emphasizing Singh's unwavering support for Afghanistan and its people during his tenure. Karzai mourned the loss deeply, highlighting Singh’s dedication to India's progress.

Social media platforms saw many tributes and shared memories from individuals who had the privilege to meet Singh. These stories reflected the warm interactions and the respect he garnered across sectors — from economics to social justice.

Former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, shared his feelings, saying, "So sad to hear Manmohan Singh has passed. I always found him a delight to work with and like a benevolent father figure," speaking to Singh's nurturing presence and mentorship to budding leaders.

The global reaction showcased Singh's impact not just within India but across the globe as nations mourned the loss of someone who played such key roles on international stages. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also conveyed sincere condolences to the Indian people, marking Singh's contributions as monumental for the US-India strategic alliance.

Tributes continued to pour in as individuals and leaders recalled their personal experiences with Singh, many describing him as approachable and wise. He was viewed as more than just a politician; he was seen as someone who genuinely cared for the advancement of India and its ties to the world.

Reflecting on the sentiment surrounding Singh’s legacy, it's clear he left behind enormous shoes to fill. The relationships he nurtured and the reforms he championed continue to influence India’s position on the global stage.

Even after his passing, Manmohan Singh’s vision for cooperation and progress remains significant. Biden concluded his remarks by affirming the commitment to advancing the ideals Singh championed throughout his life.

Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three children, and his legacy will undoubtedly resonate as future leaders endeavor to follow the path he paved. The heartfelt tributes from across the globe serve as a reminder of the indelible mark he has left on the world.
