Global Celebrations Mark The Start Of Hanukkah 2024

Diverse communities unite to light menorahs, reflecting resilience amid challenges during the eight-day festival.

Dozens of people gathered outside of city hall on the afternoon of Dec. 25 to light a menorah and celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. Held by the Rohr Chabad Student Network of Ottawa, the event marked 50 years since the first public menorah was lit at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia in 1974.

The ceremony was led by Rabbi Chaim Boyarsky, who said the menorah’s job is to “bring light to a world that's gone dark.” Boyarsky addressed the audience, speaking about the dangers of hatred and the importance of standing proud as Jewish individuals. He reflected on the “atrocities” of Oct. 7, 2023, and told the story of a boy kidnapped by terrorists who managed to escape.

“The menorah is a symbol of Jewish pride to stand loud and proud for the Jewish people,” Boyarsky stated.

While attendees chatted and enjoyed traditional donuts, many others used their holiday Wednesday to skate on the Rink of Dreams. Rideau-Vanier Coun. Stéphanie Plante lit the 12-foot menorah and addressed the crowd, acknowledging the challenges faced by the community.

“Things have been difficult,” she remarked, but emphasized the presence of allies, including herself. “It’s important for me around the holiday season to touch base with every group I can,” Plante, representing her diverse ward, added.

Boyarsky reiterated the call to be the light for others, stating, “even when there’s darkness, we have to be the menorah.” He highlighted the necessity of defending values of freedom and inclusivity during these trying times.

This year, Hanukkah began on the same day as Christmas, making it the first occurrence since 2005. The intersection of these two holidays was noted as significant for many families and communities across the globe.

According to a news release from the Finkelstein Chabad Jewish Centre, Ottawa’s menorah is “one of over 15,000 large public menorahs throughout the world,” which include notable locations like the White House and the Eiffel Tower.

Simultaneously, U.S. President Joe Biden greeted the start of Hanukkah with encouraging words. He shared a quote from the late former British Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks on his social media. “Rabbi Sacks said: A people who can walk through the valley of the shadow of death and still rejoice is a people who cannot be defeated by any force or fear,” Biden posted.

The President emphasized the resilience and faith of the Jewish people, noting, “That capacity for faith is the light of the Jewish people. May it shine from menorahs around the world as Hanukkah begins.”

This year’s celebrations reflect not only joyous traditions but also the strength and unity found within the Jewish community, which continues to uphold its values and heritage amid the societal challenges they face.

Both celebrations highlight how Hanukkah serves as more than just a holiday; it acts as a beacon of hope and perseverance, calling for unity and pride within the Jewish community worldwide.
