Authorities in Bulgaria have announced the temporary closure of the Giurgiu-Ruse Bridge, set to take place from March 6, 2025, at 17:00 until March 7, 2025, at 05:00. The closure, implemented by the National Company for Road Infrastructure (CNAIR), affects both directions of traffic for all types of vehicles, as repairs are necessary on the Bulgarian side of the bridge.
The primary reason for this closure is the execution of repairs, which includes the monolithic connection of concrete panels installed on both sides of the traffic lanes within the 413-meter long bridge segment. According to CNAIR, these repairs are important to prevent vibrations during the concrete curing process, which is needed to achieve the initial strength of the material used.
"The closure is necessary for ensuring initial concrete strength during the repair process," CNAIR stated, emphasizing the importance of these works for the bridge's long-term structural integrity.
Motorists are advised of the significant inconvenience the closure will cause and are recommended to seek alternative routes to reach their destinations. CNAIR has provided several suggestions:
- Călărași to Silistra: available for cars and freight transport via ferry.
- Ostrov (Constanța) to Silistra: road access for cars and passenger transport with coaches.
- Negru Vodă (Constanța) to Kardam: passing through for road vehicles.
- Vama Veche (Constanța) to Durankulak: alternative roadway.
- Calafat (Dolj) to Vidin: another route for motorists.
- Zimnicea (Teleorman) to Svishtov: ferry service available.
- Turnu Măgurele (Teleorman) to Nicopole: also available via ferry.
- Bechet (Dolj) to Oreahovo: ferry passage.
- Lipnița (Constanța) to Kainardja: road access (border crossing open until 20:00 for vehicles up to 3.5 tons).
- Dobromir (Constanța) to Krushari: road access (also open until 20:00 for vehicles up to 3.5 tons).
For those who typically rely on the Giurgiu-Ruse Bridge for transportation between Bulgaria and Romania, the temporary closure will pose challenges, particularly as authorities have also indicated the possibility of additional closure for another 12 hours at the end of March for repeat maintenance work.
Road users are encouraged to plan their travels accordingly, taking note of the alternate routes provided to minimize delays and disruptions. Authorities stress the importance of these repairs to maintain safe and reliable infrastructure for all motorists.
Overall, these planned maintenance efforts are aimed at ensuring the longevity and safety of the Giurgiu-Ruse Bridge, known as the "Bridge of Friendship," and are expected to contribute to the continued seamless connectivity between the two countries.
