Giovanni Allevi Named Citizen Of The Year

The composer returns home to celebrate healing and share his book on resilience.

Renowned pianist and composer Giovanni Allevi has been awarded the title of 'Citizen of the Year' by the city of ascoli Piceno. The honor was delivered by Mayor Marco Fioravanti during a ceremony held on December 28 at the historic Palazzo dei Capitani. Allevi, celebrated for his contributions to music and culture, accepted the award with gratitude, emphasizing the pride he feels representing his hometown.

The recognition not only celebrates Allevi's international success but also his deep roots and connection to ascoli Piceno, the city where he was born. The event drew approximately 400 attendees, culminating with the presentation of his latest literary work, titled "I nove doni. Sulla via della felicità". This publication, which translates to "The Nine Gifts. On the Path to Happiness," is reflective of his personal struggles and triumphs, particularly during his battle with multiple myeloma.

Speaking before the crowd, Allevi shared impactful insights from his experiences, stating, "During the illness, I realized the experience of suffering can bring a glimpse of light." These words set the tone for the evening as he spoke candidly about his health challenges and how they have shaped his artistry and perspective on life.

Prior to the book launch, Mayor Fioravanti addressed the audience, expressing how Allevi's musical genius has brought joy and recognition to the city. Ta comment emphasized the notable achievements of Allevi, stating, "His art grants glory to the city of his birth, and we are proud to honor him as our Citizen of the Year." The award is the first of its kind established by the Arengo, the governing body of the city, adding significance to the recognition.

Filled with emotion, Allevi likened his trials to those of the characters from Homer's Iliad, portraying his suffering as transformative and universal. "The gifts I speak of are those of the seven notes... I transformed the word 'myeloma' immediately to music," he revealed, illustrating how he has turned personal pain and hardship to inspiration, culminating in his creative works.

Allevi's personal story added depth to his presentation. He reflected on the role literature and culture played during his treatment: "Writing the book was very tiring because I wanted to weigh each word, knowing it would be read by those experiencing suffering." His narrative within the memoir ranges over themes of resilience, strength, and the pursuit of happiness, allowing readers to glimpse his philosophical outlook on life.

During the event, he was also asked about how his illness has changed his relationship with his audience. Allevi stated, "Today I have a closer bond with people because the audience now shares their experiences of illness with me," demonstrating the empathetic connection he forges through his art.

The evening unfolded under the watchful eyes of his loving family, including his parents and brother, bringing warmth and support to the occasion. Giovanni expressed how being back home and surrounded by nature during his summer recuperation played a significant role in his recovery: "I found the poetic and divine contact with nature," he said, grounding himself amid the healing process.

Looking forward, Allevi revealed plans for his concert tour's conclusion, stating, "I want to celebrate my healing because I had to interrupt everything right there due to terrible pain" as he aims to finalize his tour performance on February 20, 2024, at the prestigious concert venue in Vienna, where he had previously been unable to perform due to his health issues.

Through his art, Allevi has shown remarkable resilience and strength, embodying the spirit of hope and perseverance. His story continues to inspire not only those struggling with illness but also anyone seeking to find light amid adversity. Concert-goers can look forward to what promises to be an emotional and triumphant end to his tour as he returns to where it all paused, ready to celebrate not only music but life itself.
