Two of Japan's most recognized confectionery companies, Ginbis and Hokuriku Seika, are set to delight consumers with exciting new products this spring. Ginbis has recently updated its popular Marude Cake na Biscuit line to cater to the desires of modern consumers, particularly women aged 20 to 40. Meanwhile, Hokuriku Seika is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the beloved Moomin series with the release of limited edition biscuits.
According to Moeko Yoshimura, the public relations officer at Ginbis, the brand aims to reflect the 'sometimes luxurious desires' of consumers with its refreshed offerings. Starting from March 10, 2025, convenience stores began offering the revamped products including the Chocolate Flavor and Tiramisu Flavor. Both flavors have been reformulated, now packaged in 50g pouches with the addition of new 80g box options set to hit all sales channels on March 24, 2025.
The Chocolate Flavor now boasts rich Belgian chocolate, enhancing its flavor profile, and the packaging has been redesigned for greater visibility and appeal. Meanwhile, the Tiramisu Flavor highlights luxurious Hokkaido mascarpone cheese, ensuring the bisquit delivers both richness and the iconic taste of coffee.
Revamping the classic biscuits to allow consumers to enjoy them as bite-sized indulgent treats fits well within current trends. The triangular shape of the biscuits is also intentional, as it evokes the look and feel of cake, making them even more enticing.
Ginbis isn’t stopping there. This summer, they will launch another exciting flavor—Melon Shortcake Flavor—which will be available for a limited time from June to September 2025. The Marude Cake na Biscuit line promises to bring together thick yet slightly chewy textures with flavors reminiscent of cake, combining innovative soaking techniques for enhanced moistness.
On another front, Hokuriku Seika is marking the significant milestone of the Moomin franchise, associated with the first publication of The Little Trolls and the Great Flood back in 1945. The company is releasing the Moomin 80th Anniversary Limited Salt Caramel Biscuit Bottle on March 24, 2025. Each bottle features unique artwork from the MOOMIN80 collection, filled with salt caramel flavored biscuits shaped like various Moomin characters.
The limited edition Moomin biscuits are crafted to highlight the sweet notes of caramel, accented with salt, making for a unique treat. Each biscuit within the bottle will come in six different character shapes, pleasing both collectors and fans alike.
The suggested retail price for the Moomin biscuits is set at 1320 yen (including tax) for 90g, and they are expected to be available at nationwide retail stores and various online platforms including the official Hokka online shop.
Both Ginbis and Hokuriku Seika exemplify how Japanese confectionery brands leverage nostalgia and innovation together to create products targeted at specific consumer demographics. Ginbis targets modern women seeking indulgent yet convenient treats, with their own Moeko Yoshimura stating, "We want women aged 20-40 to enjoy these biscuits as little indulgent treats during their busy lives."
At the same time, Hokuriku Seika wants to revive the charming nostalgia of Moomin’s early narrations. A company representative expressed excitement about bringing the Moomin franchise back to life through modern flavors. "The Moomin bottle will feature limited edition art and delicious salt caramel biscuits shaped like beloved characters," the spokesperson noted.
With such fresh, appealing products, both companies aim to not only satisfy existing fans but also attract new consumers. While Ginbis continues to innovate its biscuit line, Hokuriku Seika's focus on nostalgia and limited edition offerings ensures its place within the competitive market.
This blend of tradition, character, and contemporary flavors showcases Japanese companies at their best, as they continue to create beloved snacks for all ages. From Ginbis' creative biscuits intended for brief indulgence during busy schedules to Hokuriku Seika’s artistic celebration of Moomin heritage, the confectionery world is expected to see some exciting developments this spring.
