Gilan Sees Dramatic Changes In Vehicle Traffic Trends

Despite a decrease in incoming vehicles, departures from Gilan surge significantly, revealing shifting travel patterns during holiday season.

The travel scene in Gilan province has seen a remarkable shift over the past week, indicating changing patterns in vehicular movements. According to a report by Mehr News Agency on March 20, 2025, more than 304,000 vehicles have entered Gilan in the last seven days alone. This influx represents a decrease of 9% compared to the same period last year, despite the overall increase in departures from the province.

While the number of vehicles entering Gilan saw a decline, the number of vehicles exiting the province increased significantly. The report revealed that nearly 376,383 vehicles departed Gilan, marking a substantial rise of 14% from last year. This contrasted with the trend observed in incoming traffic and raises questions about the logistics and the underlying factors influencing travel patterns.

Notably, the busiest entry route into Gilan was the Qazvin-Rasht highway, where an impressive 164,296 vehicles crossed into the province. Following closely was the Ramsar-Chaboksar road, which recorded 126,461 entries. These statistics highlight the vital role these routes play in regional transportation and the significance of Gilan as a destination.

On the exiting side, the Qazvin-Rasht axis was also the leader, showing the highest number of departures with 124,615 vehicles. This suggests a heavy reliance on this primary route for both entry and exit, emphasizing its importance in regional connectivity. During the Nowruz holiday season, which traditionally sees increased travel, the average traffic recorded was around 806 vehicles per hour on the provincial highways.

The regional director of Roads and Transport in Gilan, Fariborz Moradi, provided insights into the situation. In an interview, Moradi explained the dynamics of vehicle movement in and out of the province, offering a comprehensive view of the transportation landscape. “Traffic on the inbound roads to Gilan is flowing smoothly,” he noted, referring to the conditions of the roads during this busy travel period. His observations reflect not only the efficiency of the roadways but also highlight ongoing logistical management during peak traveling times.

Empirical data shows that while entry numbers have seen a decline compared to last year, the significant jump in vehicle departures highlights changing travel behaviors among residents and visitors alike. As Moradi pointed out, the trends raise important questions for transport planners and city officials about the infrastructure needed to accommodate this increase in vehicle exits.

The data from the Roads and Transport department indicates that managing the exit flow will be essential, especially during peak travel seasons like Nowruz when many families embark on vacations and journeys. The statistics suggest a shift in travel destinations and preferences as Gilan continues to attract visitors.

This substantial uptick in vehicle exits over the previous year, juxtaposed with a decline in entries, points to a possible trend where residents may be opting to spend their vacations in other locations or varying their travel approaches. Such insights will be critical for local businesses and tourism sectors, which heavily rely on the influx of visitors during the holiday periods.

In summary, the travel dynamics in Gilan are changing. As reported, less traffic is entering the province while more vehicles are leaving it, suggesting broader changes in travel habits and destination choices. Future transport plans and tourism strategies will need to adapt to these emerging patterns to ensure efficient management and support for both residents and visitors alike.
