Giants' Quarterback Shuffle Raises Questions Ahead Of 2025 Draft

With Daniel Jones released, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito vie for the position as New York seeks its future quarterback.

The New York Giants are engulfed in turmoil as they enter the 2024-2025 NFL season, particularly concerning their quarterback situation. Following the release of former franchise quarterback Daniel Jones, head coach Brian Daboll finds himself under pressure to find stable leadership at the position. With five consecutive losses behind them and minimal offensive productivity, the Giants are gearing up for significant changes.

After the team’s latest heartbreak—a narrow 20-17 defeat against the Carolina Panthers—Daboll refrained from committing to Jones' successor. "I'd say we got a lot of work to do here in the next few days, in the next week, and we'll evaluate where we're at and what we need to do," he said, according to ESPN's Jordan Raanan. Jones struggled to perform against the Panthers, completing just 22 of 37 passes for 190 yards, two interceptions, and one rushing touchdown.

This lackluster performance has fueled speculation about whether Daboll will make changes to the Giants' roster. Following the disappointing outcome, he reiterated his intention to evaluate the quarterback options available: "We weren’t good enough," he candidly stated post-game, highlighting the urgency for improvement.

The quarterback dilemma escalated as the Giants made the decision to bench Jones after several ineffective outings due to injuries and poor performance. Subsequently, Tommy DeVito was thrust to the forefront, with Lock having secured the backup role after limited playtime this season. DeVito managed to clear concussion protocols, making him available for matchups, but lacked track record success, amassing zero touchdowns and no interceptions across three games. Meanwhile, Lock faced his own challenges, starting against the Cowboys but resulting in another defeat.

Lock’s performance has not been convincing either. He threw two interceptions returned for touchdowns during the Giants' latest game against the Atlanta Falcons, continuing what has been one of the worst stretches for the organization. Daboll praised the Falcons' defense but admitted, "You can’t win when you throw two interceptions for touchdowns." This leads to heightened scrutiny of the front office and questions about the future direction of the team.

The Giants are currently eyeing the 2025 NFL Draft with considerable urgency. After parting ways with Jones, it’s become apparent they are not finding any success and are now likely aiming for the highest draft pick. New York currently holds the second pick, and reports indicate the organization is paying close attention to several top quarterback prospects. Jordan Raanan noted the front office has been extensively scouting Colorado’s quarterback Shedeur Sanders and viewed multiple games live, signifying their serious interest.

Conclusively, there’s also rising chatter about Miami’s Cam Ward, who has put up impressive numbers this season. His stats include 4,123 yards with 36 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions, making him one of the standout quarterbacks available. NFL analysts speculate Ward could go first or second overall depending on how draft strategies play out, and choosing him could prove pivotal.

Both Ward and Sanders have shown potential but also come with caveats. While Sanders has the raw talent to uplift the Giants, his history of public criticism of teammates raises red flags. Similarly, Ward has flashed brilliance, but the Giants will need more than just a new starter to turn the franchise around. They’re faced with making significant improvements along the offensive line and bringing skill positions help to support any new quarterback.

With much work to be done and no quick fixes to the quarterback situation, the pressure mounts on Daboll to deliver results. General manager Joe Schoen must navigate these tough waters, possibly facing scrutiny considering the franchise's recent changes and performance standards. More than simply identifying talent, the Giants’ front office must create the right environment for any quarterback to thrive.

Looking forward, the question resounds: can the Giants finally secure the quarterback of their future, or will they find themselves once again scrambling for stability? With the clock ticking and the draft approaching, every decision made will critically impact the franchise's direction.
