Giant Pandas Return Home To National Zoo

Bao Li and Qing Bao welcome back the beloved pandas as conservation efforts continue

Two adorable giant pandas, Bao Li and Qing Bao, have arrived at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., marking the return of these beloved animals to the zoo after nearly a year’s absence. The national interest sparked excitement among panda enthusiasts and zoo-goers, eager to welcome back their furry friends. Following the recent agreement between the United States and China, these pandas are not just animals; they embody the spirit of international camaraderie and conservation efforts.

The two three-year-old pandas landed at Dulles International Airport on October 15, 2024, after embarking on a 19-hour flight from their previous home at a research facility southwest of China. Enthusiastic spectators were quick to form a motorcade, showing their support as the pandas were transported from the airport to the zoo. Acclaimed assistance from the FedEx Panda Team ensured the bears traveled safely, and their truck was uniquely decorated to match their notable status.

Upon their arrival at the zoo, the distinguished pair was greeted by excited visitors, including regular zoo attendee Nan Aron. She expressed her fondness for pandas, saying, “They have such a gentle spirit and playful nature. It’s like being around little kids—they love to play and interact!” Her comments highlight the special bond many feel with these gentle giants.

The anticipation for the pandas’ return built up over the past 11 months when three of their predecessors left the zoo under the terms of the previous agreement, leaving loyal fans longing for their presence. During their time away, panda lovers expressed sentiments likening their absence to missing dear friends. With the return of Bao Li and Qing Bao, visitors like Aron will no longer feel the pangs of longing and can once again enjoy the joy these pandas bring.

The Smithsonian National Zoo, known for its long-standing partnership with China to promote panda conservation, will house the bears for ten years. Any cubs born during this timeframe will eventually return to China as part of the protocols of their agreement. With the new arrivals, the zoo will continue its rich panda legacy, which began back in 1972 when the first two giant pandas were gifted to the zoo following President Nixon's groundbreaking visit to China.

Zoo officials announced the bears’ arrival just prior to their landing, stirring up excitement through social media. Despite the flurry of anticipation from fans, the National Zoo is temporarily closed to help the pandas acclimate to their environment. Protocol requires these newcomers to undergo at least 30 days of quarantine, minimizing the risk of disease or parasites being introduced to the zoo’s other animal residents.

During their quarantine, Bao Li and Qing Bao will experience various enrichment activities to encourage their exploration of the new habitat. The zoo’s staff will cater to their needs and help them adjust to the different scents and noises of the zoo, ensuring their comfort and happiness.

Despite being out of sight for the immediate future, zoo-goers are eager to know when they can finally see the pandas. The public will have their first opportunity to visit Bao Li and Qing Bao on January 24, 2025. Following their grand debut, the zoo has planned several special events and programs to celebrate this welcoming from January 29 to February 9, 2025, with no reservations required. Such events promise to attract large crowds of visitors eager to lay eyes on the returning icons of the animal world.

For those with zoo memberships, there’s good news; members will get exclusive early access to the pandas between January 10 and January 19, 2025, ensuring they get the first glimpse of Bao Li and Qing Bao. Those who wish to secure this special opportunity are encouraged to sign up for time-entry passes to avoid missing out on this exciting moment.

Once they open to the public, visitors can catch live footage of the pandas thanks to the Giant Panda Cam, which will relaunch alongside their debut on January 24. With upgraded technology, panda enthusiasts can enjoy watching their favorite animals from home as they munch on bamboo and engage in playful antics.

Despite their brief absence, the arrival of Bao Li and Qing Bao assures Washington, D.C., of once again having the gentle giants to delight and inspire future generations. The excitement surrounding their return isn’t just about the pandas themselves, but also the connections they symbolize between the U.S. and China, all through the lens of conservation and mutual respect.

Visitors and social media followers can maintain their panda connection during the bears’ quarantine by following the zoo’s updates online. The zoo encourages the public to keep an eye on their social media accounts and website to stay up-to-date on these remarkable animals and their surroundings.

The energy surrounding the pandas' arrival reflects not just the affection people hold for these animals, but also the collective enthusiasm for wildlife conservation efforts. They serve as powerful ambassadors, reminding us of the importance of preserving biodiversity and the shared responsibility to protect endangered species. With Bao Li and Qing Bao's return, Washington, D.C., reclaims its place as home to these adorable creatures, cherished by all.
