Ghana’s Illegal Mining Crisis Demands Urgent Action

Political leaders and experts unite to address the devastating impact of galamsey on the environment and public health

The challenges facing Ghana due to illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, have reached alarming levels. Despite the government's previous commitments to eradicate this persistent crisis, various stakeholders continue to voice their concerns about the dire state of the nation’s environment and resources.

Chief Biney Hamilton Nixon, the Deputy Campaign Coordinator for Special Operations of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has taken to social media to urge Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to break his silence on the illegal mining crisis. Biney emphasized the urgent need for decisive action against galamsey, highlighting its devastating effects on the environment, stating, “Our rivers are dying, our food is toxic, and future generations will inherit a country with environmental scars.”

He referenced President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's prior call for Ghanaians to become active citizens instead of idle spectators. Biney stressed, “Leadership is not just about wealth but about leaving behind a legacy of integrity,” imploring the Vice President to take tangible steps to confront the crisis. His letter to Bawumia reflected the growing frustration among the populace over the government's apparent inactivity, urging them to push for accountability.

Adding to the chorus of calls for action, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, poignantly remarked during the opening of the MOLE XXXV Conference at Ho, “We will be known as a generation of greed and selfishness if we fail to protect our water bodies.” Her remarks served as a warning to the current generation, stressing the importance of safeguarding the country’s natural resources for future generations.

At the conference focused on Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6), Alhassan highlighted the urgent need for collaborative efforts to tackle the destruction of water bodies caused by illegal mining activities. She underscored the dire repercussions of galamsey on water resources, stating, “The impact on the destruction of the water bodies is devastating and frightening.”

The conference aimed to assess Ghana’s progress and challenges concerning WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services and deliver actionable insights for moving forward. Joining the dialogue, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, urged leaders to transcend partisan politics and collaborate to solve the galamsey crisis, remarking, “They should look beyond politics to help find solutions to the menace because it was the grassroots who bore the consequences.”

It’s not just the environment feeling the brunt of galamsey; there are social and economic ramifications as well. The mining activities often occur outside legal frameworks, leading to conflicts with communities. People have lost their livelihoods, and families have been deeply impacted as they struggle with the consequences of contaminated land and water sources.

Despite the government’s formulated action plan to curb illegal mining, concerns linger about the sincerity and efficacy of efforts taken so far. Public discontent escalated recently as many feel promises made by the administration remain unfulfilled. Professor Aning, who studies security and development, raised skepticism saying, “There’s a lack of seriousness from the government,” pointing to the ineffective measures and lack of political will to see the crisis addressed comprehensively.

The galamsey issue isn’t solely about illegal miners and their operations. Many are calling for investigations and accountability for those purportedly enabling these activities, which often includes local elites and political figures. The intertwining of illegal mining operations with broader economic conditions makes the fight against galamsey not just about law enforcement, but also about addressing poverty, unemployment, and broader developmental challenges within the country.

The recent outcry among various community leaders and activists emphasizes the desperation felt across the country. Without immediate and decisive action, they believe the country’s future is at risk. Communities continue to be affected by the rampant environmental degradation resulting from mining, and many feel their voices are being drowned out amid political rhetoric.

Indeed, the consequences of illegal mining extend well beyond the immediate harm to the environment. It threatens agricultural productivity, exacerbates the water crisis, and places significant strain on health services as communities face rising rates of illness linked to poor water quality. The sanitation minister emphasized this stark reality, remarking, "We cannot fail this generation and so we need to double efforts to tackle galamsey to protect and preserve the environment and our natural resources."

While the discourse around galamsey has reached new heights, many wonder whether the current leadership possesses the commitment needed to effect real change. Observers remain cautious as they await substantive actions rather than mere promises. The country stands at a crossroads, and the decisions made during this period could affect generations to come.

Families across Ghana hope their leaders will heed these warnings and commit to meaningful reforms, not just for today but for the futures of their children and grandchildren. Without such intervention, the narrative around galamsey may continue to evolve from one of concern to one of disaster.
