Gerwin Van Der Werf Wins 2025 Boekenweekgeschenk

His novella 'De krater' highlights the road trip of three young people with tragedy and humor.

Gerwin van der Werf, the 55-year-old author from Leiden, has been selected as the writer of the 2025 Boekenweekgeschenk, marking a significant milestone for the Dutch literature scene. His winning novella, titled "De krater," was chosen from among 149 submissions for the novella contest organized by the Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (CPNB) to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Boekenweek.

Van der Werf's novella narrates the tragicomic road trip of three young people, allowing readers to immerse themselves fully in their authentic experiences. The announcement was made on March 2024 at the Amsterdam Schouwburg, and it came as a surprise to the author, who expressed, "Ik ben zielsgelukkig en trots in de voetsporen van Hella Haasse te treden. Een droom die uitkomt," referencing legendary author Hella Haasse, who similarly won as part of the Boekenweekgeschenk tradition.

This demonstrates the immense popularity and cultural significance of the event.

The unique aspect of this competition was the level of anonymity afforded to entrants. The jury, led by Rik van de Westelaken, assessed the submissions without knowledge of the authors, focusing solely on the quality of the story. Upon reviewing the manuscripts, they unanimously agreed on Van der Werf's narrative as the best, which they described as "...een gelaagd verhaal over een tragikomische roadtrip van drie jongeren." This judgment highlighted the relatable and universal themes within the novella, praising both the humor and sadness woven throughout the narrative.

Among the jury members were noted authors and critics, including Hanna Bervoets and Lidewijde Paris, who pointed out the skill displayed from the first page of "De krater". Bervoets shared her impression: "Vanaf bladzijde één kon je zien: dit is trefzeker, dit is een auteur die weet wat hij doet. En puntgaaf." This immediate recognition of Van der Werf’s talent is pivotal, as it reflects the collective excitement within the literary community about discovering new voices.

Gerwin van der Werf is not entirely unknown; he previously gained recognition when he won the Turing Nationale Gedichtenwedstrijd in 2010. Since then, he has written several novels, with two, "Strovuur" and "De droomfabriek," nominated for the prestigious Best Book for Young Adults. His works have received accolades, and "De krater" continues this tradition of engaging storytelling suitable for readers of all ages.

During the upcoming Boekenweek from March 15 to March 23, 2025, "De krater" will be available for purchase, provided readers buy at least 15 euros’ worth of books. This initiative aims to encourage book sales and deepen the connection between writers and readers. Aendekerk noted, "Ik weet zeker dat dit verhaal vele lezers zal raken en inspireren," indicating the anticipated impact of Van der Werf's storytelling on his audience.

Reflecting on the honor of being named the Boekenweekgeschenk author, Van der Werf expressed eagerness to engage with readers during his tour. He stated, "Ik verheug me er heel erg op om met lezers over dit verhaal te praten, maar of dat voor een stampvolle zaal is of een klein clubje, dat maakt me echt niet uit." This humility echoes the sentiments of many authors who cherish the opportunity to connect with their audience.

The long-standing tradition of the Boekenweekgeschenk, which began decades ago and has seen winners such as Haasse, showcases the transformative power of literature. Van der Werf's selection reaffirms the vibrant diversity of voices within the Dutch literary community.

Entering this rich legacy, Gerwin van der Werf stands as both participant and inheritor of the Boekenweekgeschenk tradition, celebrated not only for his winning novella but also for lifting the narrative techniques and themes of Dutch literature through relatable storytelling. Looking toward the future, he embodies the hope and creativity flourishing within literature today, and his novella stands to touch countless lives during the next Boekenweek.
