Gerber Recalls Soothe N Chew Teething Sticks Over Choking Hazard

Nationwide recall follows one emergency room visit and customer complaints about safety risks for infants.

Gerber Products Company has issued a nationwide recall of its Soothe N Chew Teething Sticks over concerns about potential choking hazards for infants and young children. The announcement, made on Friday, involves products distributed across retail stores and online nationwide including states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

The company confirmed this recall after receiving multiple consumer complaints of choking incidents and one reported emergency room visit linked to the use of the teething sticks. 'We sincerely apologize for any concern or inconvenience this action has caused to parents, caregivers, and retail customers,' Gerber stated.

The recall includes all lot codes and sizes of the Gerber Soothe N Chew Teething Sticks, which are available in two flavors: strawberry apple and banana. These edible teethers, marketed for children six months and older, were introduced to provide parents with alternative options to traditional teething toys and medication.

According to information released by Gerber, the teething sticks are hollow tubes, perfectly sized for babies to grasp easily. The recall has affected distribution throughout states including California, Texas, and even Puerto Rico, but not Alaska, New Mexico, North Dakota, West Virginia, or Wyoming.

The Soothe N Chew Teething Sticks were marketed as safe, grain-based alternatives to soothe teething pain. Gerber described them as massaging babies' gums with real food as they chew, with product development focusing on safety since babies typically begin grabbing objects at six months. 'Our goal was to introduce a long-lasting, edible product,' stated Gerber's principal scientist at the time of launch.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been notified of the recall, and Gerber has emphasized its commitment to cooperating fully with federal officials during this process. Parents are urged to stop using the teething sticks immediately and return them to the retailer for a full refund.

Retailers within the affected states have been instructed to implement return procedures, ensuring the swift removal of the recalled items from the market. Gerber's active response to the situation seeks to alleviate any potential health risks associated with the products, bolstering confidence among consumers.

For any concerns or questions, Gerber invites consumers to contact their 24/7 customer service helpline at 1-800-443-7237. They also advise any parents worried about injuries related to product use to consult their healthcare provider.

While this is not the first time Gerber has faced such safety concerns, the company continues to be one of the leading brands in the baby food market, constantly working to improve product safety standards. Previously, the company also initiated recalls to address safety issues, including one notable recall back in 2007 due to choking hazards.

The recent recall has sparked conversations among parents and caregivers about the safety of food products marketed for infants, especially those meant to ease teething discomfort. Consumer advocacy organizations are increasingly urging manufacturers to implement more stringent safety measures and testing to prevent such incidents.

Organizations often highlight the importance of transparency from brands and calling for quick action on recalls when consumer safety is at risk. The current Gerber recall serves as a pertinent reminder for companies to prioritize safety; any lapse can potentially impact the trust parents and caregivers place in their products.

With the heightened focus on baby product safety, Gerber's recall and the subsequent consumer reactions highlight the pressing need for comprehensive safety protocols across the industry. This incident will likely influence future consumer behavior as parents become more vigilant about the products they purchase for their children.
