George Foreman, Legendary Boxer, Dies At 76

The two-time heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist passed away surrounded by family.

Boxing has lost a legendary figure with the announcement that George Foreman has died at the age of 76.

Foreman enjoyed a rich career in both professional and amateur boxing, highlighted by his victory at the 1968 Olympics where he won a gold medal. He later became the heavyweight champion of the world on two occasions, making him a standout figure in the sport. One of the most memorable moments from Foreman’s career was the legendary Rumble in the Jungle fight against Muhammad Ali in 1974, where he lost his title.

Foreman initially retired from boxing in 1978 after suffering his second professional loss to Jimmy Young. However, he returned to the sport in 1987, driven by a desire to raise money for a youth center he founded. This second chapter of his boxing career was remarkable, culminating in Foreman becoming the oldest heavyweight champion at 45 years old when he knocked out the undefeated Michael Moorer.

His last fight occurred in 1997, where he suffered a majority decision loss to Shannon Briggs. Throughout his life, Foreman also dedicated himself to philanthropy, often using his platform to make a positive impact in the community.

On March 21, 2025, Foreman's family announced his death, expressing their sorrow through a heartfelt statement posted on Instagram. “Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose,” the statement read.

The family continued, “A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two-time heavyweight champion of the world. He was deeply respected — a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name — for his family.” They also requested privacy as they honored his extraordinary life.

George Foreman’s legacy is cemented not just by his accolades in the ring but also by the impact he made outside of it. He will be remembered as a true champion, both in sport and in life.
