Gen Z Dating Trend Highlights Social Status Over Genuine Connection

A new phenomenon known as 'throning' raises questions about dating motivations and emotional well-being.

With the emergence of new dating trends, Gen Z is redefining romantic connections, and one of the latest phenomena capturing attention is known as 'throning.' This trend sees individuals selecting partners primarily based on their social status, raising significant questions about authenticity and emotional well-being.

According to PureWow, 'throning' involves dating someone who can bolster one’s social image or reputation. Essentially, it’s about placing partners on a figurative throne to leverage the clout they bring to the relationship. But as dating norms evolve, such practices beg the question: Are these 'throners' merely seeking validation, or do their actions indicate more complicated social dynamics?

Sonal Khangarot, a licensed rehabilitation counselor and psychotherapist, explains the psychological mechanisms at play. "The trend of throning for social status or clout often stems from a strong desire to be validated, acknowledged, and accepted socially," she notes. She adds this behavior frequently springs from fractured self-esteem and can stem from feelings of inadequacy and the need for emotional validation. This desire can prompt individuals to seek recognition through superficial means rather than through internal fulfillment.

The ramifications of pursuing relationships for status can be severe. Khangarot asserts, "For someone dating for recognition, there is often a sense of unfulfillment and inadequacy. Their sense of worth tends to rely on external validation, which can result in emotional disconnection and dissatisfaction, as genuine connections are often lacking." Partners drawn to social status may feel objectified, leading to trust issues and emotional hurt, creating a vicious circle of disillusionment.

Is social media enhancing this need for validation through status-driven relationships? Indeed, Khangarot believes social media plays a pivotal role. "If you’re not active on social media, you don’t exist" has become a prevalent mindset, pushing individuals to adopt high-status relationships as identity markers. Popular phrases like 'power couple' fuel this idealization, leading many to search for partnerships primarily to boost their social stock.

For individuals who might recognize themselves as 'throners' but feel unfulfilled, Khangarot offers practical guidance. She emphasizes the importance of reflecting on the origin of the need for validation. "Ask yourself: Do you genuinely feel happy, or are you simply projecting happiness?" Finding clarity on personal values and interests can help build healthier self-worth. Khangarot stresses the significance of nurturing love and connection grounded within the self rather than external factors.
