Gen Hoshino Changes Kohaku Song Amid Controversy

NHK announces last-minute song swap for New Year's Eve event due to backlash over original choice.

The 75th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen is set to feature Gen Hoshino, who has recently changed the song he will perform due to controversy surrounding the original choice. Initially, Hoshino was slated to sing "Why is Hell Bad," the theme song for the film of the same name directed by Sion Sono.

NHK announced on December 26, 2023, the decision to replace Hoshino's performance with his song "Barabara," citing various audience reactions and the sensitive nature of the previous song's association with allegations against Sono.

Originally released alongside the film, "Why is Hell Bad" was written during Hoshino’s recovery from subarachnoid hemorrhage, making it particularly significant to him. The lyrics were deeply personal, reflecting his own experiences rather than the film's story. Hoshino himself clarified this on his official website, stating, "The song is based on Gen Hoshino's personal experience."

Despite its personal significance, the song's association with Sono became problematic after sexual assault allegations against the director resurfaced. Following the announcement of Hoshino's performance, social media erupted with criticism and concerns about how singing this song might contribute to secondary trauma for survivors of sexual violence.

Responding to these concerns, NHK reiterated their commitment to not condoning acts of sexual violence and acknowledged the reactions following the song announcement. They stated, "We cannot completely deny the possibility of secondary damage," which contributed to the decision to change the song.

The new selection, "Barabara," is drawn from Hoshino's debut album and was chosen with the aim of delivering encouragement to those facing difficult times, as expressed by Hoshino's team. "We want to encourage those enduring tough times with this song," they expressed, highlighting the intended message of resilience.

NHK's official statements assured the public of their dedication to addressing such sensitive issues, emphasizing, "We are committed to not condoning any acts of sexual violence." The change of song was not only about the music choice but also about the broader societal impact and the responsibility of public figures to engage thoughtfully with their audience.

Gen Hoshino, who has shown deep respect for his artistic craft, is set to perform "Barabara" during the Kohaku event on December 31, 2023. This decision, made after extensive discussions between Hoshino's camp and NHK, aims to deliver both entertainment and encouragement to viewers on New Year’s Eve.

With this song change, viewers and fans are encouraged to look forward to Hoshino’s performance, which will be broadcast live. Tickets for the event went quickly, and excitement built around the Kohaku event promises to make this year's show memorable.

Through this selection, NHK and Hoshino aim to focus on delivering messages of hope and solidarity, emphasizing the healing potential of music during challenging times.
