New Jersey hardcore band Gel has officially disbanded following their show on March 19, 2025, at Earthdom in Tokyo, Japan. Once poised to enjoy a successful touring year, including performances at Coachella, their disbanding has been linked to serious misconduct attributed to former guitarist Anthony Webster.
The band’s abrupt decision to part ways comes after a series of alarming allegations against Webster, including financial theft and violations of the band's privacy. According to a detailed statement released by Gel, Webster is accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from the group’s finances, spending funds on personal expenses, including purchases on OnlyFans and mysterious transactions via CashApp.
“Gel is no longer a band,” the group wrote in their statement. “Anthony Webster has committed such heinous acts in trying to forward himself in his musical career that he’s done irreparable damage to the band in the process, and it’s affected us as human beings more than we can even attempt to explain.”
The accusations go further, with the band asserting that Webster leaked nude images of members on Reddit, stating, “Let that one really sink in. He did that all while still in a band with us.” Additionally, they detailed incidents of reckless behavior that endangered their safety, including smashing the band’s van window after online provocations and erratic driving that put their lives at risk.
Describing the situation, the band likened their experience to being in an abusive relationship, emphasizing the emotional hardship of ending something they deeply cared about. “This is our life’s work, our passion. It’s not so easy to just give something up,” they stated.
Prior to their final performance in Tokyo, Gel had been gearing up for a busy year. Their latest EP, Persona, released in August 2024, was well-received, and the band was excited about their upcoming tours with Spiritbox, Volbeat, and a headlining run across the UK and Europe. However, with the disbanding announcement, all scheduled shows have been canceled.
Although Gel originally intended to continue without Webster, their final message to fans expressed deep sorrow over the abrupt ending. “We apologize to our fans and the bands we were set to tour with, including Spiritbox and Volbeat. We truly hope for the best for all of you,” they wrote.
Following the tumultuous events leading to their split, it was revealed that the popular local promoter Japangigs shared clips on social media confirming the band's last show. The atmosphere at Earthdom was charged, knowing this was the end of the band. Videos showcased Gel performing passionately, with special attention drawn to their founding guitarist's absence, as Ekulu guitarist Connor Jones filled in.
As fans grapple with the unexpected conclusion to Gel’s story, the artistic contributions the band made during their run will leave a lasting imprint on the hardcore scene. Gel’s music remains a testament to their creativity and hard work, and while the band may no longer exist, their legacy will continue to resonate.
In a heartfelt closing to their public farewell, Gel encouraged fans to cherish friendships and support each other. “Take care of each other, and love your friends,” they advised, ensuring that while their musical journey had ended, the bonds formed along the way would endure.
