Gavaskar Urges India To Drop Siraj For Test

Criticism highlights the urgency for team changes amid performance issues

Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian cricket captain, has called for the exclusion of pacer Mohammed Siraj from the side as India struggles against Australia. Gavaskar’s critique shook the cricket world as he suggested bringing in Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana to back up Jasprit Bumrah after what he deemed subpar performances from Siraj.

These remarks came after India faced off against Australia during the second Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia piled on the runs, setting India back significantly with their formidable score of 474 runs. By the end of the second day’s play, India found themselves at 164 for 5, with Siraj under scrutiny for his lack of impact.

“I think Siraj, perhaps, needs a little bit of a break,” Gavaskar stated, noting the right-arm bowler's difficulty on helpful pitches. “I am not saying a break. He needs to be told he is left out of the team for non-performance.” His words reflect the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the need for brutal honesty over euphemisms like 'rest.' "When you start talking about 'rest', players get wrong ideas. They feel they don’t need to up their game," Gavaskar continued.

While Siraj has taken 14 wickets across the first three Tests, averaging around 4.7 runs per over, his recent outings have not impressed. Against Australia, he was one of only two Indian bowlers who finished the innings without taking a wicket, conceding 122 runs off 23 overs—an economy rate of 5.30. This starkly contrasts with Bumrah, who has been instrumental for the Indian side, notching up 25 wickets at the same stage.

Gavaskar pointed out the necessity for the team management to be direct with Siraj about his performance, which has undeniably fallen short of expectations on pitches where assistance was offered. "But I think Siraj needs to be told ‘look, you are not bowling as well as we expected you to on pitches,’” he reiterated, emphasizing the important distinction between supportive and detrimental communication.

Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana emerged as the prominent alternatives suggested by Gavaskar. Krishna started the series strong with four wickets on his debut but was later omitted for Akash Deep. Harshit Rana also contributed early on but was recently replaced. Gavaskar expressed confidence, saying, “If you want to make two changes—Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana to support Jasprit Bumrah—by all means, do it.”

These adjustments speak to the broader dynamic and struggles within the Indian cricket team as they face formidable opponents on their home turf. The emphasis on accountability could reshape not just Siraj’s role but the strategy the team adopts going forward. Indeed, how the Indian team management approaches these conversations will weigh heavily on Siraj’s confidence, as well as the team structure overall.

With India's cricketing reputation hanging on every match, the handling of players like Siraj is becoming increasingly pertinent. The discourse is not merely about performance on the field; it's also about nurturing talent and maintaining morale within the squad. Gavaskar’s criticisms are sure to reverberate through the corridors of Indian cricket, stirring discussions about the balance between mentorship and competition.

India's next moves will be closely observed, especially with the looming final Test of the series. Are changes on the horizon? Only time will tell as fans and cricket enthusiasts await the decision-makers' response to this insightful critique from one of the legends of the game.
