Gang Violence Claims Life Of Congress MLA's Aide

The brutal murder of Hyder Ali raises concerns about increasing gang activity and unrest.

Hyder Ali, the local Congress leader and close aide to MLA N.A. Harris, was brutally murdered on Sunday morning in Central Bengaluru, shedding light on the growing atmosphere of gang violence within the city.

The incident occurred around 1 AM near Garuda Mall in Ashoknagar, where Ali was riding home with a friend when he was tragically attacked. According to police reports, he was relentlessly pursued and cornered by assailants on motorcycles who ambushed him with weapons, resulting in his death. Hyder Ali was quickly rushed to Bowring Hospital, but he was declared dead upon arrival.

Authorities responded swiftly to the scene, with Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division) Shekhar H. Tekkannavar providing key insights during the investigation. “Haider Ali, a 'rowdy-sheeter' with 11 criminal cases, was attacked and killed between 1 to 1:30 AM,” he stated. “He was ambushed by unknown assailants, intercepted, and assaulted…” Adding to the gravity of the situation, Tekkannavar indicated the nature of the attack, describing it as conducted with machetes and sickles, often associated with gang turf wars.

Ali was not merely known for his political ties but also for his turbulent past. While he was not directly involved in politics, his brother, being a social worker, placed him within the community’s political circles. Law enforcement confirmed he possessed considerable notoriety, being classified as a rowdy-sheeter due to previous criminal charges. Although multiple offenses were associated with him, the last known charge had occurred back in 2022, highlighting the complexity of his life.

Witnesses at the scene indicated the attackers fled immediately after the assault. This has led police to believe this murder may stem from the violent rivalry between gangs, particularly as there has been speculation around organized groups targeting enemies within their ranks or former associates.

Reacting to the news of Ali's death, his supporters gathered at the hospital, brandishing machetes and swords. This response triggered alarm among residents and police, who feared potential unrest could erupt as emotions ran high. The sight of heated supporters fueled concerns for safety among bystanders, with authorities recognizing the volatile potential for community backlash.

Following the murder, police registered a case at the Ashok Nagar Police Station. No arrests have been made yet, but investigators are diligently working to identify the assailants. DCP Tekkannavar emphasized, “A murder case has been registered, and efforts are underway to apprehend the attackers.” The police are actively pursuing leads and sources within the community to garner additional insights and information.

This incident marks yet another alarming chapter in Bengaluru’s battle with gang-related violence, and it poses significant concerns for local leaders as they navigate the delicate political and social fabric of the city. The authorities are committed to keeping this issue under control as they seek to resolve the circumstances surrounding Ali's death.

Despite the investigation's early stages, the need for actionable measures to prevent similar incidents is evident. The situation remains fluid, with law enforcement engaging with community members to collect solid intelligence to help stabilize the area.

Ali's murder serves as both a tragic loss for his family and supporters and as a stark reminder of the challenges facing communities buried deep within the struggles of gang rivalry and violence. This case will be watched closely as it develops, reflecting broader societal issues within Bengaluru and its neighborhoods.
