Gamba Osaka Fans Bring Energy To Kochi During J-League Match

Supporters revel in local culture and cuisine while cheering for their team in a spirited match against Kochi United SC.

In an exciting display of soccer and community spirit, approximately 2000 Gamba Osaka supporters flocked to Kochi on March 20, 2025, for the J-League Levain Cup match against Kochi United SC. The event drew a sizable crowd of about 7000 fans at the Haruno Athletic Stadium, where Gamba Osaka secured a 2-1 victory.

As fans dressed in the characteristic blue and black colors overflowed outside the stadium, the atmosphere was electric. Local supporters expressed both excitement and apprehension about the influx of Gamba fans. A supporter from Kochi noted, "The Gamba Osaka crowd is a little intimidating, but we won’t lose at our home turf!" This sentiment showed the fierce local pride amidst the large away group.

During the match, Gamba Osaka wasted no time showcasing their skills. At just 13 minutes into the first half, Uza, a former member of Japan's national team, executed a stunning play to score the opening goal. A second goal followed at the 41-minute mark, putting Kochi in a challenging position heading into halftime.

Emerging from the break, Kochi United SC launched a determined comeback. Star player Kobayashi Shin manifested this spirit by scoring in the second half, narrowing the gap to a single goal. "Although we lost, this match showed us that we can compete against J1 teams," Kobayashi reflected post-game, displaying a mixture of disappointment and optimism.

Despite the loss, the passion of the supporters remained undeterred. A Nagoya-based fan expressed, "It was frustrating not to win, but overall, it was an enjoyable match!" echoing sentiments across the cheering sections.

Following the game, the Gamba supporters didn’t simply head home; many explored the vibrant local culture and cuisine, participating in what has become known as “away tourism.” The Kimura family, who traveled for five hours from Osaka, exemplified this experience. They indulged in local Kochi delicacies at Hirome Market, where they were seen lining up for popular dishes like katsuo tataki.

"We ordered several specialties and paired them with sake. It’s been wonderful to mix soccer with local fun!" said Keiichi Kimura, as his family embraced the culinary offerings of Kochi. The sense of community was further amplified when local players from Kochi United stopped by the same market, with some even participating in community dinners organized weekly to support their endeavors.

Mizuno Sota, a player from Kochi United SC, briefly exchanged pleasantries with the Gamba fans while dining in Kochi's Tozaya Zero, a restaurant known for its game-day meals that support players. "The dish is delicious. It’s the best!" Mizuno exclaimed, sharing a moment of camaraderie in the vibrant atmosphere.

This exchange between supporters and players highlights the unique bond forming between professional sports and local cultural promotion—a synergy that seems to grow stronger with every match. Families like the Kimuras exemplify how sports events can foster local tourism, with Kimura’s daughter expressing, "I wish everyone would gather behind the goal for a choreo!" This highlights the hope and expectations fans place not only on their teams but also on the shared experience of attending these matches.

The spirit of “away tourism” not only enriches the visiting supporters but also significantly lifts local businesses. Dining establishments, markets, and attractions see a surge in visitors, particularly when games attract large groups. This mutual benefit between Gamba Osaka and Kochi offers a promising outlook for sports tourism.

Looking ahead, Kochi United SC is set to face Vanraure Hachinohe on March 23, 2025. Fans will undoubtedly continue to rally behind their team, embodying the community spirit fostered through these matches. As supporters from both teams reflect on their experiences, it’s clear that sports bring people together beyond merely competing for victory, strengthening ties within the communities they represent.
