This summer, Gainesville is experiencing a theatrical renaissance as Butterfield Stage Players and North Central Texas College (NCTC) prepare to dazzle audiences with an array of performances that cater to diverse tastes and age groups.
Leading the charge is the Butterfield Stage Players with their production of the beloved musical “Legally Blonde.” Inspired by the 2001 cult film, this delightful musical follows the journey of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who defies expectations and enrolls at Harvard Law School. The production, featuring Hayley Colwell as Elle Woods, Jackson Langley as Emmett Forrest, and Angela Doss as Paulette Buonufonte, promises to deliver vibrant performances. Under the direction of Drake Landrum, a Butterfield veteran and collegiate theater student, the show will run for two weekends with evening performances on June 6-8 and 13-15 and matinees on June 8, 9, 15, and 16.
As July transitions to August, Butterfield’s focus shifts towards nurturing young talent with the Youth Theater's presentation of “Into the Woods Jr.” This adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical offers a more accessible version for younger performers and audiences. Evening performances are scheduled for July 25-27 and August 1-3, with matinees on July 28 and August 4. This production provides a perfect platform for budding actors to showcase their skills while introducing a new generation to the wonders of musical theater.
Not to be outdone, North Central Texas College will stage its own summer production, “Puffs,” starting on June 21. This parody play, which offers a humorous retelling of a well-known magical school tale from the perspective of an often-overlooked trio of friends, has intrigued audiences since its off-Broadway debut. With performances slated for June 21, 22, and 27-30, this show offers an alternative viewing option for those looking to experience a unique comedic twist on a familiar story.
As Gainesville’s theater scene buzzes with activity, these productions not only entertain but also highlight the rich cultural fabric of the community. They provide local talent—both young and seasoned—with opportunities to perform and grow while fostering a sense of unity and fostering an appreciation for the performing arts.
