G7 Ministers Convene To Support Ukraine's Sovereignty

During their recent meeting, G7 Foreign Ministers emphasized the necessity of upholding Ukraine's territorial integrity amid increasing geopolitical tensions.

From March 12 to 14, 2025, representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the High Representative of the European Union convened in Charlevoix, Quebec. The discussions primarily focused on the war in Ukraine and the broader impacts of conflict on global stability.

The leaders reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to Ukraine's freedom and independence. They expressed strong support for Ukraine's territorial integrity and its right to exist as a sovereign nation. A key element of the talks included examining avenues for achieving peace, including the significant meeting held on March 11 between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, aimed at negotiating ceasefire terms.

The G7 applauded Ukraine's commitment to executing an immediate ceasefire, viewing it as pivotal for establishing lasting peace, compliant with the principles set forth by the United Nations. “A ceasefire is not just necessary but urgent, and we hope for reciprocal commitment from Russia,” noted Global Affairs Canada.

Concerns were raised about Russia's continued military aggression. The G7 ministers discussed potential increased sanctions and other penalties if Russia fails to honor any ceasefire agreement. “Further costs on Russia will include enhanced sanctions and caps on oil prices,” the ministers stated, reiteratively emphasizing the focus on Sweden and other nations’ military supplies to the Kremlin.

Continued discussions highlighted the need for Russia to reciprocate with ceasefire agreements extending to the release of prisoners of war and the safe return of Ukrainian children. “Trust-building measures are imperative for these discussions to flourish,” the G7 added.

Another pressing subject on the agenda was the risk posed by countries outside the European and North American alliance, particularly those supplying Russia with military assistance. The G7 condemned the support offered by North Korea and Iran to Russia, along with China's provision of weapons and dual-use components. “These actions are amplifying Russia’s capability and prolonging the conflict,” the ministers noted.

Regional issues were also discussed, including the urgent need for humanitarian aid access to Gaza and the freeing of hostages held by Hamas. The G7 expressed commitment to backing humanitarian efforts and emphasized the importance of reaching a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The G7 reiterated support for Israel's right to defend itself and denounced the terror attacks conducted by Hamas on October 7, 2023, underlining the group's unsuitability as future partners for peace.

The ministers stressed the significance of stability and political integrity across the Middle East, recognizing the sovereignty of both Syria and Lebanon during their respective peaceful transitions. They condemned terrorism firmly, calling for the protection of civilians and accountability for perpetrators of violence.

“The situation across the Middle East is fragile, requiring concerted and collaborative efforts for peace,” they concluded.

On Indo-Pacific security issues, the G7 affirmed commitment to freedom and sovereignty. Concerns were raised over tensions and military actions within the East China Sea and South China Sea conflicts. “We oppose unilateral attempts to change the existing situation through aggression,” the G7 declared, urging peaceful conflict resolutions, particularly across the Taiwan Strait.

The ministers also pointed out the need for transparency and risk reduction, calling upon China to adhere to international norms and refrain from actions undermining global stability.

On the topic of North Korea, the G7 demanded the complete abandonment of all nuclear weapons and expressed discontent with DPRK's actions, including cryptocurrency theft and enforcement of international sanctions.

Venezuela was another focal point of the meeting as the G7 ministers called for the restoration of democracy following the elections on July 28, 2024. They condemned the repression under Nicolas Maduro's regime and demanded the immediate release of political prisoners.

Lastly, the meeting addressed humanitarian crises, calling out the violence plaguing Haiti and Sudan. “We denounce the conditions promoting such chaos and reaffirm our commitment to assist through diplomatic and humanitarian channels,” they stated. With these resolutions, the G7 aims to promote global peace and unity, facing shared challenges through collaboration and strategic partnerships.
