FTSE 100 Breaks Records Amid Financial Turmoil

AstraZeneca and Walgreens face major setbacks as Amex customers complain about missing rewards.

The FTSE 100 continued its extraordinary performance on Friday, marking its best monthly gains in over two years as investors sought to diversify out of American stocks. The index's record-breaking run has led many analysts to believe there is renewed confidence among investors, particularly as economic indicators point toward resilience amid challenging circumstances.

On the flip side, the mood was dampened by AstraZeneca's recent decision to withdraw plans for a £450 million investment to establish a new vaccine plant in northern England. This decision signifies not only another setback for local efforts to boost private-sector investments but is also seen as a blow to the government’s initiatives aimed at attracting large-scale financial engagements and fostering growth.

Meanwhile, according to data from Nationwide, the UK housing market is witnessing a cool-down. The organization reported slowing house price growth as January came to a close, yet remains optimistic about the market's resilience, even as potential buyers struggling to secure mortgages continue to be a pressing issue.

Further complications arose for U.S. markets, where hedge funds have reportedly bet billions of dollars against Donald Trump’s America. Data from Goldman Sachs revealed there has been a spike in short bets against U.S. stocks, signaling growing apprehensions surrounding the market's stability and future performance under Trump's influence.

Compounding these fears, gold prices soared to record heights this week as investors reacted to potential U.S. tariffs and growing bullion stockpiles affecting international supply chains. The inflationary pressures and uncertainties tied to tariffs are steering investors toward the relative safety of gold, igniting its appeal once more.

Another significant development came from Walgreens Boots Alliance, which made headlines by suspending its dividend payments, ending over 90 years of consistent quarterly payouts. This drastic measure has sent ripples through the investment community, reflecting the company's struggles and raising questions about long-term viability.

On the consumer front, many British cardholders of American Express have raised red flags over perceived inaccuracies related to bonus point promotions. Last spring, the company had rolled out an impressive offer to new holders of the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card, promising 60,000 Avios points—valued at roughly £600—provided they met certain spending requirements. Yet, as time progressed, numerous customers discovered they never received the expected bonuses.

Money expert Amelia Murray from Be Clever With Your Cash emphasized, "I believe there are more customers who have been short-changed by Amex. Here are my three tips on what to do if you think this could be you." She encouraged aggrieved customers to first double-check eligibility for the offer, then reach out to Amex's customer service, and if unresolved, to escalate the matter to the Financial Ombudsman.

She advised, "If you don’t get anywhere with Amex, don’t give up. Contact the Ombudsman with your complaint and also request compensation for the time, effort, and frustration of dealing with this issue." Hence, screenshots of offers are recommended, serving as evidence for complaints. The Ombudsman recently validated complaints similar to those of Mark, another cardholder who met the promotional criteria but only received standard points. His case ended favorably, with the Ombudsman mandatorily requiring Amex to issue the missing Avios points along with additional compensation.

Responding to the growing discontent, a spokesperson for American Express stated, "Cardmembers should call the number printed on the back of their Amex Card to speak to one of our Customer Care Professionals should they have any questions or issues." This proactive approach aims to support customers' needs and address promotional discontent.

Overall, these financial updates highlight the interplay between market confidence, corporate decisions, and consumer vigilance. While the FTSE 100 signifies hope, the downturns faced by AstraZeneca, Walgreens, and the American Express frustrations encapsulate the often volatile nature of the financial and business landscapes today.
