Freezing Rain Warning Issued For Mauricie And Central Quebec

Residents urged to exercise caution as hazardous conditions are expected through the weekend

Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for the entire regions of Mauricie and Central Quebec, as hazardous weather is set to affect local travel and safety. The anticipated freezing rain is expected to begin Saturday evening and continue throughout the night, creating potentially dangerous conditions for residents. "Surfaces such as roads, sidewalks, and parking lots may quickly become icy and slippery," the federal meteorological agency warns, urging everyone to exercise caution.

On Sunday, Environment Canada predicts intermittent freezing drizzle for the affected regions. The temperatures are expected to rise above freezing, with forecasts indicating "the mercury will rise to 8 degrees Celsius on Sunday evening" across Central and southern Mauricie, and even reaching up to 9 degrees Celsius in Haute-Mauricie. The Central Quebec area will also see similar highs of around 9 degrees Celsius.

Once the freezing rain subsides, it will transition to regular rain overnight from Sunday to Monday, continuing until Monday evening. This shift is significant as it brings about accelerated melting of any accumulated snow. "The melting of snow will be accelerated," Environment Canada added. The agency reported on December 28, forecasting temperatures to return more definitively below zero starting Thursday, January 2.

Weather conditions will vary during this period, with intensity and periods of respite expected. The freezing rain is likely to persist mainly through Saturday night, transitioning to intermittent freezing drizzle on Sunday. Residents are reminded to stay informed about the latest weather updates, especially as conditions can change rapidly.

Drummondville and surrounding areas will see the onset of precipitation either this afternoon or evening, continuing through to Sunday. Environment Canada forecasts minimal accumulation of ice, estimating trace amounts up to 2 millimeters. The intensity of the freezing rain may fluctuate, but precautions should be taken as icy roads can create hazardous conditions.

This weather warning not only affects daily travel but also has the potential to impact events held during the weekend. Residents are advised to plan accordingly and to remain cautious when moving about their communities. With temperatures expected to rise temporarily, the combination of melting snow and glazy conditions could lead to additional challenges.

Local authorities are likely to remain vigilant during this weather event, and precautions from both citizens and local businesses can help mitigate risks during the icy period. Safety measures such as avoiding unnecessary travel and preparing for potential disruptions are recommended.

While Monday's forecast suggests the anticipated steady rain, the return of winter's chill from January 2 onward leaves room for concern as icy conditions could return following the warm spell. Local forecasts will be updated frequently as the situation develops, and people are encouraged to keep abreast of the latest weather reports.
