Freddie Freeman Scratched With Rib Discomfort Before Season Opener

Los Angeles Dodgers adjust lineup as MVP Freeman and Betts are unable to play due to injuries and illness.

TOKYO — The Los Angeles Dodgers faced a significant setback just hours before the season opener against the Chicago Cubs as first baseman Freddie Freeman was scratched from the starting lineup due to left rib discomfort, the team announced on March 18, 2025.

Originally, Freeman was slated to bat third and play first base at the Tokyo Dome, but about 46 minutes prior to first pitch, the Dodgers made the adjustment. Kiké Hernández, who was initially intended to start in left field, replaced Freeman at first base. Meanwhile, Michael Conforto, who was not initially included in the lineup, took over Hernández’s position in left.

This latest injury for Freeman raises concerns, particularly as he had been recovering from another injury. The 35-year-old star had played through broken costal cartilage during the Dodgers’ postseason run last year and underwent surgery for his right ankle after the World Series. This surgery involved the removal of loose bodies and debridement, which left Freeman limited at the start of the spring training.

Despite these setbacks, Freeman managed to participate actively during the recent exhibition games held at the Tokyo Dome against the Yomiuri Giants and Hanshin Tigers, showcasing his ability to perform at the plate. Across six at-bats during those games, he exhibited his prowess as he prepared for the season.

The absence of Freeman is compounded by the fact the Dodgers are also without Mookie Betts, the 2018 AL MVP, who could not participate due to illness. Betts has reportedly lost nearly 15 pounds due to his current health issues and has already flown back to Los Angeles to recuperate. Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts clarified, “It made the most sense for him to get back to a regular routine,” emphasizing the need for Betts to focus on recovery.

The Dodgers have previously had tremendous success with Freeman and Betts, both of whom were significant contributors to their World Series win last year, where Freeman was named the World Series MVP after hitting six homers across 20 at-bats during the series. His historic walk-off grand slam during the World Series not only echoed his capabilities but also highlighted Freeman as one of the pivotal players for the Dodgers.

Freeman posted impressive numbers during the last regular season, boasting a .282 batting average alongside 22 home runs and 89 RBIs. His consistency and prior accolades, such as being named an eight-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger, establish him as one of the game's elite players. Yet, this latest injury raises questions about his long-term health as the season progresses.

Shuffling the lineup to compensate for Freeman and Betts, the Dodgers have relied on players such as Hernández and Conforto to step up. The team, which has aimed high following last year’s success, is hoping these early injuries won't impact their pursuit of another championship. The Dodgers are still favored to contend, having acquired notable players, including two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell and the coveted Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki, who is set to make his major league debut against the Cubs on March 19.

With the new lineup, the Dodgers aim to capitalize on their depth, though losing Freeman and Betts for the opening games could have lasting effects on their momentum heading toward the domestic season opener planned for March 27, 2025.

Fans will closely watch how the Dodgers adjust to these injury setbacks as they begin their season on the international stage. Will Freeman's rib discomfort resolve swiftly, and can the team maintain its championship form without two of their top players during these initial games?
