Francophone Artists Celebrate At 2025 Music P.E.I. Awards

Vishtèn Connexions and Aubin pi la S.C.B. win prestigious accolades during gala evening.

Francophone artists took center stage at the 2025 Music P.E.I. Awards, held on March 8 at Charlottetown's Confederation Centre of the Arts, where Vishtèn Connexions and Aubin pi la S.C.B. emerged as notable winners.

The gala serves as a celebration of local talent and was part of the broader Music Week event taking place from March 4 to March 8, emphasizing the vibrant art scene of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.). The evening showcased the diversity of artistic expression, all rooted within the community. Notably, Vishtèn Connexions garnered accolades for Album of the Year and Traditional Roots Recording of the Year with their album Expansion.

Released in May 2024, Expansion is deeply personal for the group. Most of the songs were recorded by Pastelle LeBlanc, who tragically passed away in 2022. Emmanuelle LeBlanc, another member of the band, expressed the meaning behind the album: "This was really our healing album." This project not only serves as artistic work but also as a tribute to Pastelle's musical legacy.

Aubin pi la S.C.B. also celebrated success, winning the Rising Tide Community Fund Prix De L’Acadie award. The group, founded by Riel Gallant and Dave White in Iqaluit, Nunavut, has quickly become prominent within the francophone music scene of P.E.I. Gallant, now performing regularly with his group, emphasizes the community aspect through their music.

During the gala, other artists also shone brightly. Dylan Menzie earned accolades as Songwriter of the Year, with his album art for North American Dream Kid receiving recognition as well. Absolute Losers not only won Album of the Year for By Fright but also captured the Pop Recording of the Year title for At the Mall.

Attendee Michel Lalonde, who serves as the francophone representative for Music P.E.I., highlighted the importance of this week-long celebration: "It's so important... to realize the talent that's here." Music Week, filling P.E.I. communities with performances and events, showcased talents like Richard Wood, Lefunk, and Shane Pendergast, contributing to the overall atmosphere of joy and celebration.

The evening awarded 26 different honors across various categories, signifying the broad spectrum of talent present. Among other awards, Brad Milligan was named Entertainer of the Year, and Bettiii clinched the New Artist of the Year title. From classical music to contemporary styles, the award recipients represented the island's rich cultural fabric.

Gallant reflected on the community aspect of the event: "There are many from our community. It’s uplifting to see everyone come together, appreciate the artistic efforts, and carry this creative spirit forward.” This sentiment resonates with many who recognize the uniqueness of P.E.I.'s arts scene.

Music Week, coupled with the awards gala, serves as more than just recognition; it fosters collaboration and connection among artists, audiences, and industry professionals alike. The performances extend beyond the awards ceremony, creating lasting bonds and highlighting the importance of the arts for cultural identity.

Overall, the 2025 Music P.E.I. Awards not only rewarded outstanding musicians but also reinforced the significance of community and showcased the vibrant cultural scene within Prince Edward Island. Emmanuelle LeBlanc's words ring true for many involved, solidifying the notion of dedicated talent and collective effort, striving together through their art.

With such compelling performances and achievements, artists and audiences alike can look forward to the continued growth and flourishing of the music scene across P.E.I.
