Francesco Marchitelli Steps Down From ASL Roma 6

The commissioner leaves after two and a half years for a new role as director general in Alessandria.

Albano Laziale – Francesco Marchitelli, after two and a half years at the helm, has officially stepped down as the commissario straordinario of ASL Roma 6, marking the end of his leadership at the health authority responsible for the Castelli and Litorale areas. Effective January 2025, Marchitelli will take on the role of general director at ASL Alessandria, located in Piedmont, according to various political and union sources.

This development follows rumors circulating for several days and has now been confirmed by multiple local political and union representatives. Marchitelli's tenure was notable, but the shakeup brings anticipation for his successor. Among the leading candidates is Dr. Arturo Cavaliere, 50, who currently serves as the president of the Italian Society of Hospital Pharmacists and has previous experience as part of the staff at the Sant’Andrea Hospital in Rome.

While Cavaliere is viewed as the frontrunner, it is also possible the new general director will have closer ties to the local area. Alternatively, the new appointment could be drawn from the recent regional competition for 30 ASL general directors, which is set to yield official appointments by January.

Until the new general director is appointed, the role will temporarily fall to Dr. Vincenzo La Regina, the current medical director of the organization, who will serve on an interim basis. The arrival of 2025 is expected to prompt official announcements from the Lazio Region concerning these appointments.

Despite the leadership transition, ASL Roma 6 faces pressing challenges. According to the National Annual Report from the Agency for Regional Health Services (Agenas), ASL Roma 6 is categorized among the 27 territorial health authorities identified as needing improvement due to performance issues. This designation signals significant pressure on the incoming leadership to address these shortcomings and implement necessary reforms.

The report noted, "La ASL Roma 6 risulta tra le 27 aziende sanitarie territoriali 'in rosso' valutate 'da migliorare' per le prestazioni e le performance sanitarie erogate," underscoring widespread recognition of the need for action.

With Marchitelli's departure, ASL Roma 6 is at a pivotal moment, where the decisions made will greatly impact the performance and direction of healthcare services provided to the local communities. The selection of the new leadership will be closely watched by stakeholders and the community alike, with hopes for improved operations and outcomes after the transition.
