Francesca Mills Shines As Kit Brooks On Silent Witness

The actress embraces her new role, bringing fresh energy to the beloved BBC series.

Francesca Mills has joined the cast of BBC One's popular crime drama Silent Witness, adding to the show's legacy as it enters its 28th series. Mills, who portrays crime analyst Kit Brooks, has garnered attention for her vibrant performance, which has captivated both viewers and critics alike.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the role, Mills stated, "I love Kit. She's bright-eyed, very eager, and very clever. She has got a brain... live, as they are processing. What I've learned about crime analysts is they must have eyes on everything." This excitement is palpable as she dives headfirst not only to solve crimes but to connect the dots in investigations.

At just 28 years old, Francesca Mills has already made waves in the acting world, known for her roles as Cherry Dorrington in Harlots and Meldof in The Witcher: Blood Origin. Originally from Staffordshire, she has displayed remarkable resilience, having been born with Achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism. Today, she calls London home, where she continues to pursue her passion for acting.

Mills' acting career began on the stage, where she showcased her talent at the Reduced Height Theatre Company, founded by fellow actor Warwick Davis. This opportunity provided her with invaluable experience and confidence, allowing her to transition successfully from theatre to television. Her impressive portrayal of Hermia at Shakespeare's Globe's 2023 rendition of A Midsummer Night's Dream not only won her accolades but also the top spot at the 2024 Ian Charleson Awards.

Reflecting on her aspirations, Mills once shared, "From the age of nine there was literally nothing else I wanted to do." Her determination stems from support she received from her family, who always encouraged her pursuits. "I'm lucky they have never tried to steer me in a different direction," she told The Times, highlighting the unwavering backing she received throughout her career.

Early on, Francesca faced challenges, especially when she learned she couldn't join the Royal Ballet due to her height. She recounted this stark realization: "I went from truly believing I could make it as a professional dancer to swallowing... wouldn't be accepted." Despite this setback, her passion for performance remained strong, leading her to engage deeply with theatre and dance.

Notably, Mills emphasizes the desire to be seen for her full potential, stating, "I want people to go: 'Oh, I didn't know little people could move like... dance in heels...'.” With every show, she strives to showcase what performers can achieve, challenging the stereotypes often associated with actors of shorter stature.

The impact of Mills' presence on Silent Witness hasn't gone unnoticed. BBC Studios executive producer Suzi McIntosh expressed her excitement, saying, "I could not be more delighted to welcome our fabulous new cast to our Silent Witness family." This endorsement reflects the enthusiasm surrounding Mills' role and places her among others who have brought depth to the series.

Her continued contributions extend far beyond the screen, as she paves the way for future actors with disabilities. The Jill Clewes Academy for Theatre Arts, where Mills received training, expressed pride over her recent casting. They commended her achievements and the representation she brings to the industry, inspiring countless others in the process.

With Silent Witness airing on BBC One tonight, January 6, at 9 PM, audiences are eager to see Francesca Mills take her place among the talented ensemble, poised to deliver both riveting drama and authentic character portrayals.
