France has officially launched its new Zou regional train service aimed at enhancing passenger convenience and connectivity. The ceremony took place at Nice train station on February 21, 2025, marking the debut of the Zou! trains operated by SNCF Voyageurs Sud Azur, which commenced regular operations on December 15, 2024.
The introduction of these trains promises extensive service enhancements for residents and tourists alike. The Zou! train routes include popular destinations such as Les Arcs, Cannes, and Menton, as well as Grass and Ventimiglia, and Nice to Tende. This initiative is backed by a ten-year contract, awarded after a competitive tendering process, ensuring high-quality transport services.
Statistics provided by Railway Supply indicate significant improvements with the new routes. Daily schedules now add 20,000 new seats along the Canne-Nice-Menton line, thanks to increased train frequency, operating every 15 minutes from 5:45 AM to 10:00 PM, and extending until 2:00 AM on Saturdays. These adjustments are part of the overarching plan to improve passenger experience across the region.
Behind the launch of Zou! lies substantial investment, amounting to €164 million dedicated to upgrading train services and developing infrastructure. A modern technical center has been established at Nice, with estimated costs around €62 million. The improvements have already resulted in a 10% increase in passenger traffic since operations began, with punctuality rates reaching 97%, which significantly boosts reliability.
This initiative shows France's commitment to enhancing its regional rail services, making it easier and more convenient for the public to travel within and across the picturesque French Riviera. By alleviating congestion and offering timely connections, the Zou! service aims to cater to both local commuters and tourists eager to experience the beautiful coastal cities.
SNCF Voyageurs Sud Azur's president spoke at the ceremony, stating, "The Zou! trains symbolize progress for our railway sector and reflect our dedication to sustainable and efficient public transportation solutions." The launch event gathered various local officials and stakeholders, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this significant transportation project.
Looking forward, the success of the Zou! services could potentially lead to broader rail improvements throughout France, as officials continue to explore ways to modernize and expand the nation’s rail infrastructure.
